Recommendations on where to stay in Tampa when attending spring training games. Is the riverfront a good place to stay within walking access to restaurants and bars? What about along Tampa Bay?
If you're following the Yankees, the riverfront is about a 15-20 minute drive from the Stadium. I'm not sure if there's anywhere worthwhile staying nearby. Is there a different team you're following? Teams are based all along the coast and while the Yankees are based in Tampa, you may enjoy staying somewhere on the coast and following the team on their road games. We stayed in Dunedin two seasons ago to be near the Blue Jays and enjoyed it because we were close to the water and other sites. Over two weeks we saw five games and were glad to have a convenient location for the other Florida stuff to make it more than just baseball.
Thanks for the information. We will just be there 3 days and primarily to see games. We have tickets to a Yankee game on one day and next day tickets to see Tigers. So, we thought staying in Tampa, maybe by the river or bay would be good for access to restaurants/bars and strolling a bit. Was hoping for a hotel with bar/restaurant facilities. We won't be able to do a lot of walking due to health issues.
As Allan noted, it really depends on whether you want to have more of a beach vacation atmosphere where you're staying, or whether you want to stay closer to Steinbrenner Stadium. Tampa is a really beautiful Florida city. Generally I'm not fond of a lot of places in Florida but Tampa is one that I would definitely go back to visit. And there's a lot you could do and in the city.
For example, Ybor City is one of the really cool places with a lot of history and it's only about 15 minutes away (by car) from Steinbrenner Stadium. It has a very nice downtown area with restaurants and bars. But again, if you'd rather be by the beach, there's plenty of beach places to rent and then you can just drive to the stadium when you want to watch them play.
ETA: I saw your post above so it sounds like you don't have much time for sightseeing. You might want to consider just staying near the airport for convenience, as it's not that far from the Yankees' stadium, and you're going to have to drive a distance to get out to where the Tigers play
Thanks for all of the information. We have decided to stay near the airport and Steinbrenner stadium. Will suit us considering the purpose of our visit. We have been to Tampa before and have stayed in Ybor City even, so we know the area somewhat. Thanks again for the input.
