Suggestions in Sydney and Melbourne

Hi all,

My wife and I are heading to Sydney next month. We have already booked this Sydney wildlife tour to see kangaroos and wombats. I've heard koalas are best seen around Melbourne?

Do you have any other recommendations of things to see or do. We love wildlife, having recently come back from a trip to Africa, but love all sorts of things from museums to hiking etc.

TIA,
John and Sue.

We rented a car just outside of Melbourne so we wouldn't have to drive in the city. We drove to Healesville Sanctuary and saw local animals and a great bird show. We continued toward Phillip Island, checked into a hotel, and went to the Penguin Parade that night. There are tour companies that do day trips to the Penguin Parade, stopping at a sanctuary near there if you don't want to drive. We went to Melbourne for the tennis tournament, but enjoyed walking around the city. If you can get to the Grampians, there are lots of emus and kangaroos.

I loved the Penguin Parade and the Taronga Zoo(especially the Tasmanian Devil). I wasn't that impressed with the Blue Mountains, but I had already been to Queenstown, New Zealand and no scenery can compare to that.
EDITED I also loved Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne

We had a rental car, so we spent one night in San Remo, near the bridge to Phillips Island. Spent a day on Phillip Island, and it was a wonderful day. We purchased the 3-day pass for Phillip Island Nature Park. During the day, we went to the Koala Conservation Center and Churchill Island, and then the Penguin Parade at night. Churchill Island was a wonderful surprise: it's very pretty and peaceful with green pastures and lots of birds, horses, and sheep. Nice walking trails and a cafe that serves lunch, coffee, and pastries.

Do go to Melbourne and take tours to Philip Island for the amazing penguins.
Also, go to see The Great Ocean Road, it is special.

We did a tour with one overnight that included both of those (from Melbourne).

Regarding Sydney, do visit the Opera House for an opera if one is on the calendar. Also, take a harbor cruise. Go to Bondi Beach for a visit. Consider a day trip to the Blue Mountains. Sydney has some great museums. Do go to the Zoo. The Royal Botanic Garden, in Sydney are awesome.
