We are considering a trip to Chiloe and Torres del Paine in September. We are seniors, fairly fit, but not hikers. We most always travel independently by car. Would love to see the awesome landscape, absorb the culture and enjoy the food and wine. This would be our second trip to Chile and we are eager to return. Scheduling restraints push us to late September. Would appreciate any and all thoughts about traveling to this area at that time of year. Thanks so much.
Sorry to see you have received no replies. I would offer information but have not been to South A yet.
WE did a wonderful cruise around the Horn from Buenos Aires to Chile in 2014 and stopped in some ports in southern Chile. We enjoyed it very much.
There was one port that took us to an area with a town that looked like a Swiss village. Apparently, many Swiss and Germany people settled there.
Some weather info for a nearby town, Puerto Montt. https://weatherspark.com/m/25113/9/Average-Weather-in-September-in-Puerto-Montt-Chile

mml,
We flew from Santiago to Punta Arenas and took a four day, 3 night cruise with Australis Cruises...about 150 passengers. We traversed the Straits of Magellan, visited the Isla deLos Penguinos, explored the flora and fauna on another island, observed icebergs, and had some very interesting lectures about our excursions. The cruise was focused on the natural world. The staterooms were comfortable and not too small, the meals were excellent, drinks were included, and service was excellent also. You might want to add a cruise of this type to your land excursions. (In Punta Arenas visit the fascinating cemetery...I will say no more about it....and have a drink at Shackleton's favorite bar in the Hotel Jose Nogueira.)
Buen Viaje!
mml,
By the way, we were in Chile in March or April (autumn there)...can't remember offhand. Didn't have time to visit Torres de Paine and at that time my knees hadn't been replaced, so hiking was out. Our weather was pretty good, getting cold, especially on the water, but not too wintry yet. You will be there in spring, so you could have some warmish day, but remember your latitude.
Have fun!.
Thank you all for your responses! I was getting discouraged about this potential trip but am now feeling reenergized.
@Cherryplanter, thanks for getting the ball rolling (BTW, we loved our visits to Sweden…though we’ve not been to Gotherburg).
@Judy, appreciate the tips. Will definitely check out Australis Cruises. And if we make it Puerto Arenas, will be sure not to miss the cemetery.
@Going234, the links are very helpful, thanks.
