South Africa Suggestions/Tips

I am traveling to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Kruger National Park for a mini-safari in late April. I'm wondering what type of weather I might encounter? Any information, suggestions, tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Barbara

While I have no experience traveling in South Africa, a relative and several friends visited Cape Town in recent months and rave about it. The food and wine were exceptional and a good value.

South Africa is amazing! I spent 8 months there right after graduation. I just came across this feed so I thought I'd throw some of my own thoughts in even though you didn't ask about anything besides weather! Firstly, if you are into hiking, make sure you climb Table Mountain (in Cape Town) instead of taking the gondola... which you can take down. It's a different experience! Also, visiting Robben Island is a must. Make sure you try local food such as biltong and bobotie. When in Kruger, go on an evening safari as well as an early morning safari, as different animals can be seen really late or really early. Also drive yourself through Kruger if you have a car just to have your own experience! Fish Hoek is a beautiful beach town that you can drive to but when driving, be extremely cautious, especially when driving at night. Street smarts are necessary in South Africa for sure... no walking at night alone, leave all noticeable jewelry at home, etc. Pretty straight forward stuff. Arniston and Langebaan are beautiful beach towns. Clifton right near Cape Town is a gorgeous beach as well. Make sure you see the penguins at Boulder Beach! Also, Stellenbosch is a beautiful wine region, if you like wine. A really cool South African restaurant experience near Stellenbosch is a place called Moyo, where they have dancing and entertainment in a gorgeous setting. If you can make it to the Cango Caves, you MUST! It's a very unique experience and nearby you can also visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch. As for accommodations, if you can afford it, I HIGHLY recommend Buffels Drift Game Lodge. Lastly, for a fun family-friendly event, visit Ratanga Junction. It's a cool theme park! That is A LOT but take what you will from my suggestions! I'm sure you will have an amazing time!

I have the opportunity to tag along with a friend to South Africa in early December. My friend is from there but has been in the USA for 50 years. While with me for a couple days - mostly I will need to be on my own with a tour group. I need suggestions please of a good overall of the country for about 7 days. Not the prison, mines or vineyards. Thanks for suggestions. Bullrem
