Separate air tickets with JFK Airport the change

I booked a tour to Egypt with a tour company that included a great fare for air from JFK to Cairo and return.

However, I live in South Georgia and normally fly out of Jacksonville, Florida airport.

I will need to get to JFK and return. I normally fly Delta.

The flight to Egypt and return is on Egypt Airlines.

Having had delays every time we go through JFK, I am thinking about flying into JFK the night before (that would involve waiting for the Egypt Air flight until later afternoon). Thinking of staying at the TWA Hotel in the old TWA terminal.

On return to JFK from Egypt the flight from Cairo arrives about 3PM, would it be safe to book the flight to JAX leaving at 6:30PM or should I wait another day?

After going through a couple of near misses where we almost missed our connecting flight, we now spend the night. Both times it was pre-Global Entry and it was on separate tickets. All you need is for the Egypt Airlines flight to be delayed to put a kink in your travel plans.

JFK can be difficult, so I would stay at a hotel fora night going both directions. I’ve heard that the TWA Hotel is great, but there are many other hotels near the airport that offer shuttle service, and these might be less expensive. Just search on a site like TripAdvisor or booking.com, although I always book directly from the hotel’s website.

Many of the hotels near JFK get bad reviews. If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know.

I've stayed at many of the hotels near JFK.

When is your trip? A brand new Marriott and Residence Inn were scheduled to open in October but have been delayed. (They are next to each other.)

Otherwise, the hotels aren't great but for one night they're fine. I lean towards the Courtyard or the Hilton. The Hamtpon Inn is also okay

Be aware, the hotel shuttles at JFK cannot pick you up at the terminal. You have to take the Airtrain to Federal Circle and get picked up there. They can, however, drop you off at the terminal.

If you have a lot of luggage, it will be easiest to stay at the TWA hotel.

I agree, stay at a hotel in both directions.

I have recently stayed at the Hilton and, although it was probably not the greatest hotel, it was fine for one night. I ate dinner there and it was also fine. Many airline employees were staying there. I’m guessing that most other name-brand hotels in the area are okay too for a night.

The TWA Hotel is $240 for a standard double room.

The Hilton Garden Inn is $178 and Hilton NY JFK is $266.

The Fairfield Marriott is $193 and the Crowne Plaza is $263

I can get a discount as a member of Hilton Honors.

The TWA Hotel's restaurant prices are sky high. However when I go to the other hotels NONE of them provide a menu for the restaurants. However, they can't be more than what TWA wants.

TWA is the only hotel I'd stay in anywhere around there, but their rates become very expensive with taxes. Almost everything else is been used as, or has recently been used as, temporary homeless shelters.

A factor to consider is how you'd spend the day checking out of the room and into the flight.

Another strategy to consider might be to fly in earlier the day before and head into the city. You could even fly into LGA. Have a nice dinner, maybe see a show, and the next morning go to a museum before heading to JFK for your Cairo flight.

Scudder, you say that the Hilton, Marriott, Crowne Plaza, etc. were all used as homeless shelters?!

Amazing, I must admit that I was a bit surprised by the review ratings of hotels near JFK. Most were in the 3's. Usually, a Hilton or Crowne Plaza will be at least a 4.

Going into the city would be costly and frankly, we are not interested. We have visited NYC in better times when crime was more under control.

The TWA Hotel rates weren't that out of line with the hotels, but their restaurant menu prices were out of sight.

I can’t say all the hotels there have been used as shelters. I know many have been, but don’t know which.

The bulk of the expense to visit is in accommodation and food, which you’d already be incurring to stay near JFK.

And yes, crime has been on a statistical upswing in New York, as in many major cites around the world. But is it really as concerning as fear-pandering media has profited from people believe? https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2022-is-nyc-safe-crime-stat-reality/

I stayed at the Hilton in June. There was no sign of homeless people staying there. There were lots of airline employees, business people, and tourists like me spending one night between flights. The room was spacious and clean and quiet. I ate in the restaurant and, while it certainly wasn’t cheap, cheap, it was not nearly as expensive as what I saw on the TWA site. The shuttle got me to my flight efficiently.

I think you are worrying needlessly about the hotels near the airport. Most name-brand hotels will be okay for a night. Choose one for the night going to Europe and, if it is acceptable, use it again when you return. If, not, try another one.

That being said, my son’s in-laws stayed at the TWA hotel and enjoyed it very much.

I stayed at the Courtyard at the end of June. There were no homeless. Like Renee, all I saw were flight crews, business people, and tourists.

On one road near JFK are the Courtyard, Hampton, Hilton, Radisson and Crown Plaza all in a row.. (The new Marriott and Residence Inn will be between the Hilton and the Radisson.) There are other, cheap hotels/motels a few miles away. Those were the ones used as shelters. Not the major brands.

I've stayed at all of them except the Radisson and wouldn't hesitate to stay in them again.

But if you prefer the TWA hotel, by all means, stay there.

If you are going to stay near JFK, stay at the TWA hotel. I would never recommend any other hotel near JFK. As for your question about taking a 6:30 PM flight home from JFK, even if you have GE, it’s still a gamble. That night you could stay in Manhattan and then fly home via LGA the next day.
