Seeing Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

Planning a trip to Europe, but I'm thinking of stopping over for 2 nights in Newark (because we'll be flying United), and seeing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island before heading on to Europe.

I've never been to New York and I have no idea how I'd get from our airport hotel to the sites. I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks!

With two nights, I'd stay in Manhattan; and get a NYC experience. Enjoy the sites and take a taxi to the airport on your day of departure. We had a layover once at Newark that ended up delayed so long we went to the Newark mall just to get out of the airport; so that was enough of Newark for me (no offense meant to any residents). NYC is such a great adventure. I'd take advantage of it with the amount of time you'll have.

The museum on Liberty Island is absolutely one of the best I’ve been to….well worth visiting!
Ellis Island also, but if you can only get to one, choose Liberty Island.

It's fairly simple.

From Newark Airport, take the AirTrain to the Airport Train Station. From there take NJ Transit (train) to Penn Station in NYC. From Penn Station, take the #1 subway to South Ferry. The Ferry terminal to the Statue of LIberty and Ellis Island is nearby.

Most hotels that offer free airport pickup and dropoff will usually drop you off and pick you up from the Newark Airport train station. If they will, you will save the time and cost of dealing with the Airtrain.

Depending on when you’re going, if it’s high tourist season you’ll need to get up early to beat the crowds to the ferry at the tip of Manhattan. Alternatively you could get a car at Newark Airport, stay somewhere in New Jersey (the neighborhoods get better the further you go from Newark!) and take the ferry from Liberty State Park which should be less crowded, especially during the week. But if you’ve never been to New York it’s worth the hassle to be able to stay right in Manhattan. Good luck!
