Interested in suggestions in both destinations at the end of October. Starting in buenos aires. Been there. No help needed. If we fly to salta do we then drive to atacama or just go directly and skip salta. All suggestions for hotels and sites are welcome.

Salta is a lively northern city with a different mix of peoples than BA. The native heritages are more influential. A day excursion driving into the mountains to the north, heading towards Bolivia, can be fascinating, with many stunning geological features, a salt lake, and easily spotted wildlife including alpaca and herds of feral donkeys. A visit is worth considering although I can't help with any routing that would include Chile.
