Saftey Victoria Falls & Cape Town

I am thinking of going on a escorted safari trip that includes Victoria Falls & Cape Town in 2020 with a friend of mine (2 females). We would probably come in a day before the tour starts. I would like to get peoples impression on safety. The travel.state.gov does not give a glowing review. I know things can happen but I am thinking if I am aware of my surroundings and don't be out after dark I should be fine. In addition wear a money belt and don't flash large amounts of money. A good portion of the time I will be with a group as well.

I've spent some time in South Africa. It was a one moment stunning and at the next unnerving. This is a truly stunningly beautiful, dangerous place full of wonderful people. My God, they were kind. Would I go back? In a heartbeat.

LF,

You may find it helpful to also have a look at the Canadian government website concerning travel in South Africa. I had a glance at it, and there's definitely a few things to be concerned with. You'll need to be extremely careful.

Especially for a safari trip where you're out in the bush, be sure to have all your vaccinations up-to-date and arrange a good travel medical insurance policy. If your health provider recommends malaria prophylaxis, I would suggest not using Lariam (Mefloquine) as it can cause severe side effects in some people.

I encourage you to give it a try.
There are ways to add some extra buffers for your early days. Consider staying at the same hotel as the tour. organize a car service/taxi pickup from airport. Take a day tour rather than walk around on your own. However, a hotel located close to the sites of interest could allow for quick independent travel minimizing risk. A free walking tour, or a hop on hop off bus gives you the lay of the land early so going out on your own afterwards can mean going with more confidence.
As a solo woman traveler, who started with tours and now comfortably travels for weeks on end to South America, Europe and even Africa, one may start making short forays just like you are suggesting. Research definitely helps to reduce fear or uncertainty. YouTube gives a sense of familiarity that lets me have some recognized points of reference. I am aware that safety needs to be looked at, but it seems to be just part of the planning and isn't a focus or reason to decide to go or not. I am not a fearful person to start with and I find ways before hand to deal with things that might make me uncomfortable. I hate to barter, and am no good at it. If I have to barter for a taxi, I take the bus, walk or know I will have paid too much. If I arrive in the dead of night, I ask the hotel to arrange a ride for me.
With two of you, your risks are much reduced. Pick pocketing may be the biggest risk. Government travel sites make every country sound less than glowing. Consider the terrorism levels of France, Spain, London. I doubt you think twice about going there.
As stated, ensure you visit a specialized travel clinic for medical advice prior to travel.
