To flesh out the suggestions above, I would use the Lonely Planet guidebook, which happens to cover both countries. Bradt is another respected guidebook name for Eastern Europe, but I have not used one. http://www.ricksteves.com/europe/bulgaria has some radio/audio files to get you in the mood.

Kaeleku hit on Bulgaria very, very well. I have to admit that on out two trips to Bulgaria in the past few years we have been lazy and spoiled. I know a great guide and very enjoyable person to travel with and we hire her to do the driving. Her services and the hotel rooms, cost of car, gas and just about everything else is about $350/day.
