Riad in Marrakech

My husband and I are travelling to Marrakech for the first time this April. I have booked a stay with Riad Houdou, located at 54 Derb El Hammam, El Moukef, Marrakech. The riad looks very nice and I am looking forward to experiencing it. My question is more about the area where it is located. If anyone is familiar with this location, I would love to hear more about the area. Thanks.

The reality of being in a medina is that sometimes it's hard to say definitively where all you have been, so I don't know that I've been in that specific part of the medina, but it's close to the touristic center of Jemaa el Fna, so the location is pretty central. I stayed most recently at the Riad Albatoul which is only about 7 minutes away. Often places will not look like much of anything from the outside (nondescript wall on a ho-hum derb, or alley) but then are gorgeous inside. I remember the general area as being a mixture of touristic streets with local-oriented streets too.

Since it is your first time, it's probably a good idea to have someone meet you at an entry point to the medina and walk with you to the riad when you arrive. It can be a bit overwhelming at first to navigate, because even when streets have names, it's not always especially clear if that's the street you are looking at, and it feels like there's always a guy waiting for you to seem lost to offer help or someone on a motorbike roaring through. I usually try to learn some permanent sites along the way to navigate - shops may close up, but the sign above it will still be there, for example. I also found Google Maps on offline mode to work much better than you might expect for figuring out where you are.

Thanks for the info. We are using transport to the riad from the airport and back that the riad is arranging for us. Looking forward to a more adventurous trip than usual.

You're quite a walk from the Jama El f’na area which is the center of the medina. We stayed at the Riad El Wiam and was very impressed. As I recall we were a 10-15 minute walk from the center.

Thanks for the reply. I see on the map. I've been told and read that it is about a 15 to 20 minute walk from our riad. I will take a look at where you stayed.

Looks great! As suggested, it would be best to arrange transfer directly to your Riad since Medina is a labyrinth! Have fun!

Riad Houdou is arranging for us to be picked up at the airport and also return. The trip to Marrakech should be an experience!
