My husband and I had the pleasure of spending 3 unforgettable days in Cambodia with Sam Pho (of Siem Reap Guide) in November of 2023.
Over the years we have hired numerous guides in many countries but we can honestly say none have exceeded Sam in terms of his generous attitude, remarkably deep knowledge, flexible nature, professionalism or resourceful spirit. Despite having been a guide for over 20 years, Sam has retained his wonder at the magnificence of Cambodia's treasures which was contagious.
Our communication began while I was still stateside. Sam sent us a detailed proposed itinerary but was more than willing to modify it to suit our schedule.
Each day he punctually greeted us in his immaculate SUV, wearing a smile and ready to introduce us to his country’s exquisite gifts.
Over the course of the 3 days we spent together, we explored numerous sites far beyond the much anticipated (and phenomenal) Angkor Wat Temple (which we visited twice.) The first day exploring it extensively and the next at sunrise. Both unforgettable.
Due to his exceptional planning, we were struck that first day by the nearly empty corridors and courtyards of Angkor Wat. As we marveled, Sam explained the spiritual, geological and political significance of this UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE site.
Once we returned to his SUV, before heading to our next site, Sam refreshed us with bottles of ice water and chilled towels. Ever thoughtful, this became the pattern of our exploration.
Beyond just showing us his country’s ancient treasures Sam explained their past and present cultural, political and historical relevance. From the smallest detailed carving to the global involvement in their restoration Sam helped us to grasp their profound value to the world.
Over the course of our time together we engaged in numerous discussions regarding the various structural, scientific and geopolitical aspects of Cambodia’s historic icons, further deepened our appreciation of them.
Some of the many sites we explored were Ta Prohm (the tomb raider temple covered by jungle,) Angkor Thom, the spectacular Bayon temple, a trek up the mountain to Phnom Bakheng (to witness the stunning sunset,) Preah Khan, Bante y Srei (the pink sandstone temple,) Tasom, East Mebon, Pre Rup, Beng Mealea, (the sprawling fascinating unrestored jungle temple) and finally a boat ride through Kampong Phluk (the flooded mangrove forest with its floating villages on the great Tonle Sap lake.) A memory we will never forget.
Our only regret is that due to our poor planning we didn’t bring more treats for the precious children of Kampong Phluk… who will linger in our hearts.
Despite my penchant for lagging behind to capture one last photo I/we never felt rushed. In fact Sam would often share his talent as a photographer, suggesting just the exact spot for him to capture the perfect photograph of us.
Sam, thank you so much for your knowledge, your gracious heart and your willingness to go above and beyond for us. You helped us to fall in love with Cambodia, its treasures and most of all its people.
We hope to reconnect when we return. All the best in the future.
