I am visiting friend in San Miguel de Allende, but plan to spend 2 nights ( on my own) in Queretaro. A couple questions:
Any one have a transport/driver that could pick me up at airport, also drive me to SMA? Or other transportation ideas. I’m in my 60’s… well traveled, love adventure.
Also day trips? Ideas, company’s to use. Seems like wine and cheese tour might be fun. Any hiking ideas.
Basically any ideas for Queretaro. I’m staying central at Hotel Madero and have asked if I can get a pick up at airport, but no response! So RSF always answers!!! Thanks Peggy
We used to winter over in SMA back when we lived in the Pacific Northwest and have spent quite a lot of time in the area spread over a number of visits. By far the easiest and most economical way of getting around the country - whether getting from the airport in Mexico City to San Miguel or between San Miguel and any of the surrounding colonial cities - is via the local buses. We always had good luck with Premiera Plus but there are other companies that do pretty much the same thing. A quick google search will no doubt turn them up.
The buses themselves are quite nice - think Business Class seats on an airline - and offer comfortable seats, toilets on board, snacks, WiFi, etc. All in all a very pleasant and relaxing experience. Once arrived at your destination terminal a short (and cheap) taxi ride will get you to your accommodations.
On our first trip many years ago we booked a private car transfer company due to concerns about safety and security, but we learned pretty quickly that was massive overkill and started using the buses.
Might add that we usually made it a point to fly into the Guanajuato airport (airport identifier is BJO). We found it much easier to get thru customs and on our way versus negotiating the chaos of the Mexico City airport. Departures from there are pretty seamless but the arrivals process can be aggravating. It'll cost a little more to fly into BJO but it's well worth it - trust me.
The "Things to do" pull down menu on TripAdvisor has a good summary of local attractions in each city. I'd start there for ideas. A couple of day trips we found to be particularly memorable were the UNESCO site of Teotuhuacan near Mexico City and the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in the neighboring state of Michoacan, which can be reached via day trip providers from either SMA or Mexico City. Millions of the little guys winter over in the forest reserve there between November and March. The sight when they all take flight on a sunny day is truly spectacular - my wife still talks about that one.
You're going to love Central Mexico.
Thanks. I will check out the bus. Sounds good. I have been to Mexico City & Butterflies (Amazing). I hope to do a wine & cheese tour from Queretaro if anyone knows about this? Peggy. Colorado.
