My husband and I (early/mid 70's) would like to visit QC, Canada this fall. I have started reading what I can glean from RS questions posted in odd places (like mine). I have mobility issues (AK amputee) but get around with walking sticks on trips. Hills or cobblestones create problems and I am always researching ahead to place myself in safer places to stay and visit (tough for a traveler). I just made a reservation at the Hilton Hotel in QC, but was unable to get info on the surrounding area of the hotel. I am thinking I will need to use ubers (if possible), buses, and whatever else is available to get around to spots of interest. Anyone have advice on my choice of hotel and how I can best get around? Maybe someone has suggestions for other hotels (must have elevators) that might work?
The city was built as a fortress, complete with walls, on the heights dominating the crucial St. Lawrence River. Some up-and-down is inevitable and the streets inside the walls can be both cobbled and narrow. Your hotel is outside the walls where the slopes are somewhat gentler, but still almost unavoidable on foot. I don't know about special transport but suggest asking your hotel.
I was in Quebec in February for the winter festival.
I didn't stay at the Hilton, but saw it's location in the upper city, which is where you want to be, especially if you have mobility issues.
I used Uber a few times and it worked well.
Thank you both for taking the time to inform me more about the city and my choice of hotels. Is it difficult to get ubers/taxis and are they usually near tourist sights?
We stayed at the Hilton 2x. It is just outside the old city walls, not a long walk if I remember. You can easily get an Uber or taxi from there, they have a huge parking lot.
We stayed at the Hilton about 30 years ago but we take the train from Montreal to Quebec tomorrow and are returning to the Hilton. I am happy to check anything you would like once we get there.
I’ll ask about Uber and check the area around the Hilton. If you’d like anything else, let me know.
We are at the Hilton now and it is level right in front of the hotel but we took a tour of the Parliament today and it’s directly across the street but we still had a slight hill to get there. However, the pavement is in much better shape than Montreal! The hotel assured me that taxis and Uber are readily available. Have a great trip
