Does anyone have experience or knowledge about how safe Quebec City is after dark for a solo traveller? I have a cool hotel inside the walls of the old city, and am dreaming of a sunset dinner at Le Chateau Frontenac, mid-September. I don't plan to have a car so I'd be walking back after dark.
In my experience, Quebec City is totally safe even beyond the walls of the Old City which is very upscale. I’ve walked around late at night in Quebec with no reason to be worried about safety or street crime. In Canadian cities, a lot of residents don’t even bother locking their front doors when they step out for a while. Canadians are respectful, polite and the country is not awash with guns like the US is, so it’s much safer in Canadian cities than it is here in the U.S.
I was in QC last September, also staying in the old city, and felt 100% safe after dark. I absolutely fell in love with the city.
Yep— it’s a beautiful historic city with delicious food to match. There’s a fantastic seafood restaurant in the lower Old Town by the river that locals go to called “Bistro St.-Malo.” The chefs prepare incredible dishes at really moderate prices. It’s at 75 Rue St-Paul.
Have a great trip!
Thank you all. And I've bookmarked Bistro St-Malo for a meal. I appreciate it.
The hotel should be able to give you advice on local safety. There are also neighborhood crime maps on the web.
As for locking doors, the 2002 documentary film, Bowling for Columbine, examined local Toronto customs on locking doors.
