We will be going to St. Martin in February for 5 days and were thinking of going to Puerto Rico from there for about 4 or 5 more days. We've been to PR once -- about 30 years ago -- and were interested in returning. Some family members just returned and were there for the most recent widespread power outage. They stayed in San Juan and changed hotels after finding one with a generator; it will be a vacation that won't top their favorite list.
Realizing that a lot has changed in PR in 30 years and since the devastating storm, I'm rethinking our decision to go there. We would want to rent a car and are most interested in exploring areas other than San Juan. We're considering driving to Arecibo and either heading south through the interior; or heading west towards Aguadilla; and eventually making it to Cabo Rojo in the southwest corner. I've heard various things about safety, road condition, power stability, etc. Any thoughts on this?
If we don't go to Puerto Rico, where else would you suggest we go after St. Martin if we don't want another beach vacation?
