Progreso mexico-day excursion recommendation

Will be in Progreso Mexico on a cruise. Looking for a good day trip or local tour company to hire. Plus, what is a great excursion. Would be interested in Cenotes or beaches. Any suggestions or recommendations.

From my perspective the must see is Chichen Itza. Surely must be excursions there. Probably could get there on your own via bus and hire a guide once onsite. Enjoy!

We stopped at Progreso on a cruise about three years ago. There isn't much to Progreso itself or the beaches there. Our cruise also stopped at Cozumel and we used that stop for our beach time.

Progreso is a good location for seeing the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza or Dzibilchaltun. Chichen Itza is the more famous destination, but Dzibilchaltun is much closer to Progreso. Our cruise had excursions available to both locations. Those who went to Dzibilchaltun were able to spend much longer at the site due to its proximity to Progreso and were allowed to climb on many of the ruins. Those who went to Chichen Itza had less time at the site and were not allowed to climb up the ruins, but were treated to a more spectacular set of ruins. We opted for Dzibilchaltun because it gave us a lot longer time to explore the site given our limited time in port, but you won't go wrong with either choice.

Chichen Itza is amazing. I am unfamiliar with Dzibilchaltun, but note it's much closer to your port and includes a cenote per Wikipedia, so that may heavily weigh on your choice. Enjoy!

I forgot to mention the cenote at Dzibilchaltun. The water is very clear and chilled. It feels really good to put your feet in after a hot Yucatan day of exploring the ruins. The best part are the small fish in the cenote. As soon as you put your feet in, a bunch of small fish show up and start nibbling away at the dead skin on your feet. You'll feel a very pleasant slight tickling sensation. Both my wife and I enjoyed the free pedicure.

I don't know if you already left, but don't overlook the beautiful colonial city of Merida (probably an hour bus ride from Progresso with frequent service throughout the day). Merida is truly a gem.
