Problems Traveling Dubai

Dubai sounds fascinating but this story ran in today's N Y Post.

I have not heard of Americans or anyone else havng these type of problems when visiting Dubai. For those who have traveled to Dubai or even researched travel to Dubai, were you aware of these type of problems as describe in the article.

The Gulf states like to project an image of being modern and futuristic countries, but scratch a bit on the surface and it can become very obvious that they are theocracies ruled by islamist dictators.

While I have never visited dubai (I have been to Saudi Arabia) and nor am I disputing the reporting, I do want to point out that the NY Post is not a source that I believe should be linked (or read for that matter). Per wiki:

The Post has been criticized since the beginning of Murdoch's ownership for sensationalism, blatant advocacy, and conservative bias. In 1980, the Columbia Journalism Review stated that the "New York Post is no longer merely a journalistic problem. It is a social problem—a force for evil."[61]

When I was in Saudi, one of my first memories was walking into a western chain to buy an ice cream (Baskins & Robbins) and seeing a poster with a picture of a woman on it and the woman was crossed out-- no women allowed. Hmm.

There is another thread on ‘how do you decide where you will go next’? This is one factor I take into serious consideration: having a transparent legal system, more likely found in democratic countries that uphold the rule of law. Tourists won’t ever be able to know the ‘dos and don’t s’ of every country they visit but I have a better chance of getting it correct in the UK or Norway then in UAE or a number of other countries.

I read about the college student serving a year for just touching one of the security persons on the arm.

Frankly, I seriously doubt if that was the ONLY reason the the woman was charged with assault.

Thanks for pointing that out. It sounds like the US version of the Daily Mail, I'll make sure to avoid it in the future.

The college student has been freed and either home or on the way home but I think that she still had to spend three months in the Dubai prison.

I agree that we probably do not know all the facts
