Phone/data plans for US

I will be visiting New Orleans in Sept and cannot bring myself to pay what I did recently in Europe using my own terrible Canadian carrier’s plan. We get absolute hosed here for cellphones.
Can anyone here recommend some reasonable options? Can I buy a SIM card at the airport like in Europe?

I spent a lot of precious vacation time before searching for a place to buy a European SIM card once. This looks like a game changer.
