Going to Lima and Cusco and Macchu Picchu. How is the food handling there? Do we need to worry about Typhoid fever? Did anybody take the typhoid vaccine before traveling? None of us are immunocompromised.
We took it before we went about 10 years ago.
Check the State Department and CDC websites for other vaccine recommendations.
We did get a stomach bug and were careful.
We did Peru many years ago and did not get any vaccines,. We stayed at 5 Star hotels and used recommended restaurants,. We had no issues. We did Lima/Cusco/Manchu Picchu/ Puno.
We did not get the typhoid vaccine for Peru nor did we get turista. We ate in really nice restaurants although that is no guarantee of not getting sick. Boil it, peel it or don’t eat it is the general rule of food safety. Only drink bottled water and brush your teeth with the same. If you are concerned about tummy bugs, then get some Cipro from your doctor to take with you just in case. If you decide to get the typhoid vaccine, get the live oral vaccine (Vivotif - 4 pills over 7 days) which will give you longer immunity than the jab.
Thank you for quick reply. Yes, I’m leaning towards not getting the vaccine and just bring Cipro.
We were there in December 2023, but on a tour. No vaccines required at the time, and since we were on a tour most of the time, we did not worry about typhoid, etc. Hotels all offered bottled water and/or filtered water dispensers in the lobby. We avoided street food and salads, any fruit and veg that were not peeled, etc. You will likely have more issues with altitude than with food.
too bad I think they're advertising, cause ruthsita travelers has some useful tips. reported.
We have visited Peru three times, the last time visiting Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Also, we have been to Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Argentina and Uruguay.
We got the yellow fever and the typhoid vaccines as well as updating others.
We ONLY drank water from water bottles, not the topwater. We brushed our teeth with bottled water.
We only dined in nice restaurants, never ate street food. We had not issues getting sick.
Our tour Cusco/Machu Picchu was fantastic. We used PeruAgency.com which was super and not expensive. Price was less than half what an American tour company charged.
