Peru safe ?

Hello - I'm thinking of taking a solo trip in October to Cusco, Sacred Valley (including Machu Pichu) and Manu National park (I'll be at staying at Manu Learning Centre). For those who have been in Peru recently, did you feel unsafe? I'm a little nervous about the Dept . of State warnings.

Thanks,

Dan

Honestly, if a little nervous then don’t go. Peru and Machu Pichu aren’t going anywhere.

Haven’t been recently, but the political situation has calmed down from a year or so ago. With any S. American country there are places in every city, town, or village, where you shouldn’t go and you really need to remain cognizant of your surroundings. Your hotel should be able to tell you where and what to avoid and which modes of transportation are safer. Petty crime is an every day occurrence and in some places, has escalated somewhat. All you can do is minimize the chances of becoming a victim.

I have a whole list of considerations when traveling, but they’d probably scare you into not wanting to travel anywhere, let alone to Peru. Only you can decide what’s safe enough for you.

Go to Peru, it is my favorite S. American country.

Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu is a great trip.
We hired a PRIVATE guide/driver who was super for four days with PeruAgency.com for $799 pp. Excellent tour. See if you can join a tour if you don't want to do this.

Also, my son and some friends of his did a great Peru tour with Gate 1 Travel that they loved.

Don't try to wing it on your own in Peru for one person.

Hi Dan - I'm planning a similar trip in September with my husband. What did you decide, are you still planning to go?

We had a trip planned there last year and cancelled for three reasons. First, it is very remote and hard to get to. Second, there had recently been two transportation strikes and tourists were stuck in Cusco since there is only one way in and out on a train. Finally, the State department warnings because of political unrest. That was over a year ago so it could have settled down by now.
