My husband and I are traveling to Panama. We’re in our 70s and have traveled the world. Need suggestions for eco travel and lodges!
Consider taking a cruise that transits the canal, it is amazing. Also, Costa Rica is special.
Due to drought, the water level on Gatún lake is low so traffic going through the canal is significantly reduced. I’d check to ensure cruises are going through it regularly before booking one.
That being said, and having transited it a few times, if you have the opportunity it is a unique experience.
I've cruised the Panama Canal (the old one) and it truly is an experience not to be missed.
But if you are going to be staying in Panama there are also day full and half transit boat tours you can take, ie- not part of a cruise ship itinerary.
Look on the likes of Viator, then try to book directly with the Operator. They run from both Colon and Panama City.
I haven't researched since before covid, and I expect there to be changes since then. I also looked from the perspective of a birdwatcher.
Canopy Lodge is near Panama City. You stay in an old water tower so have views of Canopy life. Most will be birders, but there should be other animals and insects of interest in the tree Canopy. They also own a few other eco-lodges in the country.
If you have a higher budget, Tranquilo Bay Eco Lodge gets rave reviews. It is in the NE on Bastimentos Island.
Thanks to all who replied! Still looking for more wilderness adventure suggestions!
It wasn't clear whether you're interested in just Panama, or Panama and maybe elsewhere in Central America. If the latter, I'll suggest that you look into Lake Yojoa in Honduras, and specifically into a fantastic lodge called D&D Brewery. (A woodsy lodge that brews its own beer -- I've stayed there twice, most recently Feb. 2023.) At least check their web-site; you may find it interesting.
