Hi, We’re headed to Osaka in a few weeks and would love any recommendations for restaurants or must see sights. We’re staying near the Honamachi Station and will have transit passes. Thank you!
How long will you be there?
I really enjoyed the food tour that I took with Culinary Backstreets. It takes the better part of the day.

Thank you, Laura. We will be in Osaka 5 days.
For sights we liked the aquarium which is pretty impressive. The Umeda Sky Tower offers great views (though the glassed in escalator bridge might make some people nervous).
We are not normally into tourist spots but Dotonbori and the canal are so over the top that we enjoyed strolling around. And taking the obligatory pictures in front of the Glico Running Man sign.
Osaka Castle is popular. We did not enter but chose to walk around the castle grounds which was enjoyable.
5 days would be a long time in Osaka for me. Thankfully there are lots of good trips out of the city. Kyoto and Nara of course, but beyond that:
- Minoh falls/park, easy trip from Umeda station, not a full day
- Arima Onsen, authentic onsen town, accessed by train via Kobe (about 1.5 hours total travel time from Hommachi). Combines well with an evening in Kobe... -...which could be worth a day trip as well; I don't care much for Chinatown but there are some interesting saké breweries, a fantastic carpentry museum, and the herb garden with the ropeway can be lovely at the right time
- Uji is a delight as well, easy by train from Yodoyabashi or Kitahama. Byodo-in is a sight to behold, and Uji is the place for matcha if so inclined.
Bottom line: you won't be bored.
Really appreciate the recommendations, 🙏
I hope you enjoy the food in Osaka. Try the tonkotsu ramen. We slurped up our fill at a casual small shop called Zundo-ya in our Shinsaibashi neighborhood (near Dotonburi). We ordered desired items from machines at the entrance and then found seats at a counter surrounded by lively diners, where we enjoyed the ramen piping hot with condiments of our choice. Yummy.
Thank you, Tall Girl. We arrive in Osaka in 2 days and are excited to triple the food.
