End of this month I'm heading to Oman.
I'll spend a few day's in Muscat and then plan to go OUTSIDE of the main city to a Wadi or two.
I'm assuming it's best if I have my own car -- but does that car need to be 4x4?
At this point I have not settled in on which Wadi I want to go to --- so suggestion are welcome, OH and if I need a 4x4 to get there.

I had a week's work in Muscat a few years ago with a couple free days, well before covid. The place looked very safe. Most people of my group took some daytrips with drivers, organized through the hotel reception, and they were generally satisfied - a couple of them also rented a car but they did not appear like having much a better time being on their own.
We visited Oman on a cruise and took a great tour north of Muscat into the desert visiting some old forts. It was great.
I would take a tour rather than do it yourself.
