Also, we are going to be in Tokyo May 27–29 and want to see about visiting the imperial palace. Does anybody know how we do that?

Sucia is the name of the app and it shows a green bird face on the icon. You can use your apple wallet and just tap on, tap off on the Tokyo Metro and top up as you go. You can preload the app and some money before you go which allows to get started easily. This card is also used at many, many stores and shops including the very popular 7-11 convenience stores.

Here is the link to the Imperial Palace website (in English!)

If you use Apple wallet, search within there for "Suica" and the card will appear. It is green/white with a penguin drawing. That is how I added it back in 2023 when I used during my trip to Japan.
But you can also download the app itself which is a green logo with a black penguin face on it.
As Carol mentioned above, you can use for transportation and at convenient stores. I also used in 2 taxi rides I took in Kyoto which had a sign inside saying they accepted it.

For imperial palace, you can visit with a tour or on your own. I didn't join a tour and explored the main grounds and east garden. Check the link it was shared in the previous post for tour availability if that is how you want to visit.
I did as a walk-in as soon as it opened. There was a small line formed outside the gate, and you go through security screening before being allowed inside.
