I am hoping to take a two-week intensive Spanish class in Oaxaca; the dates that work for me are March 18-29. That encompasses Semana Santa, and I may not want to book this trip if markets, restaurants, etc. are likely to be closed. Has anyone traveled to Oaxaca during this time? what are your thoughts?

I haven't been there that week, but Oaxaca pulls out the stops to celebrate religious holidays like Christmas and Easter. I don't think anything will be closed, though Good Friday might be an exception for some businesses. More likely, you'll experience crowds, processions, and lots of activity. See item 8 here.
