NYC theater district great restaurant

Going to New York City for Valentine’s Day. Got a terrific Valentine’s package at Margaritaville Times Square. Plan to see a broadway show that night. I need two things. First, what broadway musical do you like and recommend? Haven’t been for a while. Not Hamilton. Next, where should we have dinner in that area? A lot of restaurants are already booked. Not ethnic this time. American/Continental or Italian. Thx for your help.

The weekly box office reports at https://www.broadwayworld.com/grosses.cfm are one way to learn what's popular.
For the week of 2024-01-28:

  • Merrily We Roll Along - highest ticket price
  • Wicked - highest attendance
  • Hamilton - highest gross revenue

There are infinite restaurants to choose from; Norma at 801 9th Ave is a good "gastronomia Siciliana."

We saw Moulin Rouge in NY in September. There are so many cozy Italian restaurants in the same block or very nearby including Il Forno and Nizza.

I'm glad to hear about your upcoming trip ! As far as restaurants are concerned , I'm not much of a restaurant diner ( None of them can hold a candle to my wife , I'm spoiled ) . However , I spent my working career as a musician , some 35 years , playing in the pits of Broadway theater orchestras . The genre has unfortunately changed ( and decidedly , not for the better ) since the late sixties when I started . There are occasionally moments when one can savor some of the great works of the American Musical Theater . The best choice you could make would be the current full scale revival of Stephen Sondheim's " Sweeney Todd ' The Demon Barber of Fleet Street " now playing at The Lunt Fontanne Theatre . This spectacular production features the full 26 member orchestra with the original orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick . This work is at the Zenith of American Musical Theater , few shows of this quality are written anymore . One word about the dining choices - walk over to Ninth Avenue - from 42 st to 57 st its lined with dozens of restaurants of all types . Be adventurous !!
