NYC - need advice for visiting 9/11 Memorial (best way to go from JFK)

We are considering a trip to Iceland this summer, but due to the return flight time of the group tour flight, we would need to spend the night in NYC before returning home, so we figure if we time our return flight correctly the next day, we might have time to visit the 9/11 Memorial and the One World tower observation area (my husband loves going up high towers around the world). We visited NYC extensively prior to 9/11, thus the more narrow focus this time, just focusing on the Memorial and the new tower.

So, here is the question: What would be the best (prioritizing safety and cost) way to reach the 9/11 Memorial from the JFK airport (train, subway, shuttle, taxi?) We would arrive at JFK around 7pm from Iceland, and we would try to catch an 8pm flight home the next day...so one night and the bulk of the next day, allowing return time to JFK.

Best place to overnight close to the airport, or better to overnight near the Memorial? Recommendations on reasonable, yet clean, nice places (not 5-star, maybe similar to a Hampton, etc.) where we would expect to experience a clean room with basic creature comforts and feel safe, etc.

This is not the ideal website for your questions, each of which needs at least 2000 words for an adequate set of answers. I recommend that you go to Trip Advisor NYC Forum and page through the last 100 entries, where these issues are exhaustively discussed. I mean this kindly.

Explanation of public transit from airport:

As far as hotels go, I really like Club Quarters World Trade Center. It's probably one of the most functional and well-designed hotel rooms I've seen, and it's just a stone throw from the 9/11 Memorial. But it's not going to be inexpensive, everything in NYC is expensive (even Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn)...try www.booking.com and search the vicinity, it will have better rates than hotel websites. NYC has such a good subway system that it doesn't matter where you stay. If you are looking for less expensive options, try Pod 39 Hotel or Pod 51 Hotel (or even Long Island City hotels in Queens, such as Hotel Nesva which has reasonable prices). I wouldn't stay near the airport...if you're going to be in NYC, then I say stay in NYC.

From JFK there is a subway to Manhatten and an express bus, either is easy if you don't have much luggage. I'd spend the night in Manhatten so you can make the most of your morning and early afternoon. There are timed entry tickets to the One World Observation deck so get an early slot and you will have time to return to the airport before rush hour.

I don't know about hotels but with booking.com filtered by your budget you can find an acceptable room.

The train runs all night.

Agnes and Beth,
THANK YOU!!! :) That's exactly the advice we needed. Love the link you posted re: the public transportation...it all looks so do-able.
Agnes, the Club Quarters Hotel looks like the perfect recommendation, exactly the type place we hoped to find, with a perfect location.

We always (well 99% of the time) travel carry-on only, so the public transportation should work great, stay overnight, then leave our luggage at the hotel until ready to catch transport back to JFK (and Beth, thanks for the reminder to do that BEFORE rush hour!!!).

I think this will all work.

Tim, thanks for the tip about the TripAdvisor NYC Forum, where we can read the 2000-word answers, but I think Agnes and Beth just provided exactly what we will need for this very short tack-on visit. But, I'll know where to go for more, if we decide to expand to a multi-day stay.

THANKS, sincere thanks again to all.

Margaret,
There's a wealth of things to do in Lower Manhattan if you have extra time. None of them take a really long time, so I'm throwing them out in no particular order:
- walking along the Battery Park City esplanade (very pleasant riverfront walk)
- seeing Battery Park at the tip of Manhattan
- NY Stock Exchange
- historic churches (Trinity Church, St. Paul's Chapel)
- walking on Brooklyn Bridge (this would take a bit longer - it's a great walk though!)

Agnes,
Thank you for the extra recommendations. And, those would likely be good post-Memorial places to visit.

It has always been impossible for me to visit the Vietnam Memorial in DC without some tears (even when I tried to convince myself to be tough), so I am sure the 9/11 Memorial will have a similar effect on me.

Thank you, again, for your help and advice. Very, very much appreciated.

Mrs. EB,
Thank you!! Great advice. While we will be able to shorten the immigration wait a bit (we have Global Entry), I don't think it speeds us thru Customs.
Good advice re: the taxi arriving and the subway returning.
We will make reservations at Club Quarters, as Agnes recommended, but will also check the discount sites for rate offers.
Thank you so much!! Definitely don't want to get stuck in NY rush hour.
Yes, I've received some INCREDIBLE advice (as I always do on the RS Forum).
