NYC Layover timing

Heading to Ireland via NYC. We have a 10 hour layover in NYC, 8am-6:30p.

What is the most economical way to get from JFK to Manhattan? What is the fastest way?

Flight for Ireland departs at 6:30p. What time should we depart Manhattan to get back to JFK to catch our flight?

Any additional resources are welcome.

Thanks in adavance for any help!

The most economical is to take the Air Train ($5) to the Howard Beach subway station from there catch the A train ($2.75)to Manhattan. Total cost $7.75. Fastest is usually a taxi. Flat fare of $52+tolls+tip. I would leave Manhattan no later than 3pm to catch your flight.

I'll second the AirTrain/LIRR combo. It is the fastest and with such a short amount of time, spend the few bucks more over the subway. A taxi, at the time you arrive, will take forever. (Just be aware the LIRR will be crowded with commuters making their way into Manhattan.)

From Penn Station you can head out almost anywhere fairly quickly.

Thanks all for you valuable input! My adult kids and i decided (out if the millions of possibilities) to do the Rock Center tour at 11am, Beyond a quick walk to Central Park afterwards, just playing it by ear. Any suggestions with the time remaining? Thx again!

Two musts for a true New York experience:

--a hot dog (either from a cart, Gray's Papaya on W. 72nd St or Papaya King on E. 86th st)

and

--a slice. (To a New Yorker, a slice means a slice of Pizza.) This is NEVER from a national chain. Ask around for the best place to get one. (By the way, where to get the best slice is a very contentious subject among New Yorkers.)

i like to join a walking tour when in a city for the first time.

We used http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-york-tours for 2 back to back walking tours of Chinatown/Little Italy followed by a Food Tour of the Lower East Side. This was not our first time in NYC so we had already seen most of the highlights, but we had never seen these neighborhoods in depth. The next time we will chose the Harlem or Brooklyn tour.

Free Tours by Foot/ New York has many NYC tours to pick from. There may be one that fits your needs and schedule. Naturally they are not "free"...you are expected to "pay what you wish' at the end.

For what it's worth...we took at 5-6 hour tour of Philadelphia last year with Free Walks. Philly is in our own backyard and I was amazed at what I didn't know and saw things I never knew existed. It was an amazing experience.
