NY Time Square to Port

Hello Everyone
we will be staying at the Mariott Marques Times Square and will need to go to Port 89 which is about 1.2 miles, 11 minute drive or 30 minute walk. we have carry on's with us. Is it safe to walk to the port or should we Uber or Taxi there? We are used to walking and are in shape for it, out concern is safety and if it's foot accessible. thanks

Pier ? Port ? I know where they are going and it is still safe. Streets are busy in the area but other folks will be making the same journey.

Sorry Pier 89 for a cruise. It seems like it’s ok to walk. Thank you all for the input.

Not a good idea to walk it, its not pedestrian friendly. Crossing 12th avenue would be similar to trying to walking across a busy interstate highway. There Is a pedestrian bridge over it which connects to the Intrepid but would be a hassle with bags. Take a taxi.

After dark the area will be a bit sketchy. Street prostitution and a lot of dodgy characters about.

Agree with Mike, use Google street view to see what he means. I have seen multiple people on a cruise message board mention difficulties in walking to cruise pier and finding correct entrance. Besides a 1-mile taxi ride will be super cheap.

that is what I was afraid of, crossing main roads and if the area is sketchy. been to NY many times but didn't wonder to that side of the town. I think since we have luggage and two little kids we will just take a taxi... Thanks for all the input.

With 3 or 4 of you and bags it’s definitely easier to just take a taxi or Uber. Especially true if it’s a hot humid summer day.

For the folks who might be headed to the Intrepid Museum or just to enjoy the waterfront I think is perfectly fine to walk during the day. As you head west from Times Square it is mostly residential. Depending on the street there are some nice brownstone buildings. Getting further west perhaps west of 10th Avenue it becomes vey commercial. Think car dealership storage lots. FedEx parking dispatch center. So very quiet on weekends and not a lot of people heading to the businesses.

12th Avenue is definitely a major street. Lots of traffic that may be moving fast. Best to be paying attention when crossing. But I didn’t find it that difficult to cross. There are well marked cross walks controlled by traffic signals. There is even a center median for pedestrians in case you only get part way across. I saw families pushing baby strollers across the street.

I personally don't think it's sketchy (there's a really nice greenway that runs all the way south to Battery City along the Hudson) but it would be too hard on your carry on's wheels to walk that far. Plus, it gets crazy hot in NYC in the summer so I wouldn't want to do that walk unless I only had a lightish backpack on me. 12th Avenue is no different than a wide street in Los Angeles or another giant suburban road - busy, not pleasant to cross, but not inherently sketchy or dangerous.

I think at this point we will take a taxi, it seems like it's a lot easier and we don't have to worry about crossing streets with luggage and kids with us. Thanks again for all the help!

There is a Pier 88 & a Pier 90. I don't know Pier 89 and I didn't see it on Google maps. That can mean nothing however. What is the cross street? 48th? 52nd?

It is perfectly safe to walk and very easy as well. Speak to those us who actually LIVE HERE and who are native New Yorkers! LOL I walk all over Manhattan.

its 711 12th avenue but no worries we plan to take a cab.... walking with luggage isn't feasible at this moment.

Keep in mind, depending on the day & time of day, it could be bumper to bumper traffic. Still, enjoy!
