NY City Hotels

A frequent query on this site often asks " Where in NYC can I find reasonably priced hotels ? " Sorry to be negative , but this article from the NY Times should disabuse anyone looking for bargains . By the way , my daughter , planning a trip to Boston in March , is finding similar price issues there , https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/24/nyregion/new-york-city-hotels.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ck4.ixjH.Q84sm4ioL8Ng&smid=url-share

Well, "bargain" is relative, I think. Like anywhere else, it depends on location and amenities. I would not expect to find a decent hotel room in NYC for under $200/night anymore. I just got back from staying 3 nights in the Chelsea neighborhood, at the Cambria Hotel (part of the Choice Hotel group). Very no-frills but very quiet, big rooms. Fri-Sat-Sun stay, $1000 (Sunday night was only $158, plus $25 or so in taxes, etc). I thought that was OK considering it's the weekend before Thanksgiving, included a Fri and Sat night rate, and is a great location on 28th St & 7th Ave. There are "reasonable" places, but you really need to hunt them down. I've stayed at the Pod Hotel locations, which are great, although not as cheap as they used to be!

There are some fine hotels close to the Queensborough Plaza, in Astoria/Long Is City, that are at times much better priced than in Manhattan. The trains into the city run frequently, are safe and it's only a 10 - 15 min. ride to Times Square, less to Central Park or 5th Ave. Just an area to consider.

Hotels right on the West Coast of Hudson can be cheaper, offer fabulous views of NYC (which cannot be had from Manhattan itself) and are 5 minutes hop on PATH (with direct connection to downtown, Chalsea or midtown)

Another bargain option (for folks who go back to hotels only to sleep) is bunch of chain hotels around Secaucus which have bus 320 stop right in front of the hotels. This bus is express into Port Authority Bus Terminal and runs very frequently and also runs late into night. This option is only for bargain hunters. I wud prefer to live in Manhattan if I can afford it
(Anywhere south of 59th street and outside of Lower East side/Chinatown area)
