Nova Scotia, PEI, Cape Breton & Newfoundland(!)

We are planning to spend several days in this area.
The first four days are PEI (first day drive from Halifax to PEI)
The next four days are in Nova Scotia (2 days in Parrsboro or Advocate, 2 days in Halifax itself)
This seems like a reasonable split to see the local towns, and hopefully some opportunistic birding
Day 9, our travel companions depart, we go to Cape Breton.
Day 10-12: wander around Cape Breton.
I have a reasonable idea of how to spend the days here, but any suggestions are welcome.

Day 13: We are thinking of taking the ferry from New Sydney to Port Basques, then take the Canadian highway that arcs through the island over 9-10 days, ending up in Argentia from where we take the ferry back to New Sydney.
Possibly do a 2-3 day trip to St Pierre in this duration.
Having spent enough time in the above places, what would Newfoundland add? Our interests are local culture, local food, history, scenery, birding, hiking. I am particularly interested in exploring the connection between these parts and Brittany FR.

Our other option is to visit the Magdalen islands but this seems quite complex to do.

On the NW side of Cape Breton, Cheticamp is a good base to explore the many trails in the National Park. Add frequent stops at Aucoin Bakery. The North Sydney area has boat tours to visit Atlantic Puffin and other sea bird islands. Auld Farm Inns near Baddeck is a great stop and central on that side of the island. The Vickers & KC are wonderful hosts. In Antigonish, we have stayed at St. Francis Xavier College - nice room in the conference center. Halifax has lots to do including the first class Maritime Museum. Have a great trip - it is hard to have a bad time.
