I'm in the planning process of a Nile cruise for Jan 2019
any thoughts on a 4 day vs 7 day cruise ? Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor
is it better to book once in Cairo
is there a major difference among the ships
I read somewhere that if a ship is not full they will change the ship at the last minute
I would appreciate your input
Try to book it through your hotel. It is cheaper to book stuff locally.
Your other post says that your Egypt adventure would be 7 to 12 days, so I think a 7 day cruise would not leave you enough time for Cairo, Alexandria, etc. As for the ships, they all looked the same to me. We did a 4 day cruise and I loved every minute of it.
thank you
I'm extending our trip to 15 days for Cairo to make certain we have
plenty of time
just confirmed flights and added a few days to a Rome stopover for outbound and a few days for Madrid stopover on the way back to Texas
so I'm really flexible on Egypt trip
Do your own research.
We did a wonderful 5 day Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan in 1985 through the Marriott Hotel chain, also stayed in the Marriott in Cairo.
Now there are many options for Nile cruises. Most all of the river cruise companies have one, Viking, Scenic, Avalon, Uniworld, Vantage World Travel and more. Compare prices and itineraries.
Also, check with hotel chains. The internet makes it easy.
When we did the cruise, we compared Sheraton, Marriott and Hilton, which were the main Nile cruise lines. So much has changed since then.
My Son is booked on the Viking.
I went mid May when it was pleasant weather in Cairo but heat built as we traveled south. In Abu Simbel it was 50C (122F). It was a 7 day cruise during a time of virtually no tourists. We visited the sites early in the morning and spent the afternoons in the AC coolness and sometimes had evening activities to take advantage of cooler dusk. If you are interested in the temples then you want as rich an itinerary as you can find and that is often a 7 day cruise.
A 7 day tour got us to Dendera, a less visited temple and one that was so serene and so unexpected, it really hit my emotions. Or the temple of Isis on Philae. Only for reference sake, this is essentially the tour I took and I was happy with the sites. https://www.trafalgar.com/en-ca/tours/t/wonders-of-ancient-egypt?season=winter+2018+2019&tripcode=wegw#WhatsIncluded
I added Alexandria as it wasn't covered, and I went to the Pyramids initially on my own. Good thing. I had a stomach bug so had to miss the tour visit and they only stayed an hour because it was so hot. I spent several hours there on the previous day. I also stayed longer in order to see the Cairo Museum on my own pace.
The other thing I would research on a more Egypt centric forum with current feedback is the temples located between Cairo and Luxor. These are even less travelled, take some travel into (as they are not as close to the flooded Nile as those in the south, but have some great history - particularly for Akhenaton (Tutenkhamen's father). It would be a rare glimpse into a historical intrigue. There had been one cruise line trying to get to these sites, so it might be worth researching.
Personally, I would rather research a tour provider prior to arrival, because for me; content and reputation would mean more than 'cheap'
I didn't reply on your other thread but you might want to look at this company. I confess it is only by google did I find it, but it is 9th on TripAdvisor and given the coverage for their awards, you can most likely verify the legitimacy of them.

Their website makes my eyes roll, but their pricing is about half of a North American tour.
