Newfoundland trip in July

My wife, daughter and I (3 adults) are planning a 7 night trip to Newfoundland this July. We plan on flying to St John's and renting a car. Because of our limited time, we plan on visiting only the eastern portion of Newfoundland. The west will have to wait for a subsequent visit. We plan on spending 2 nights in St John, 2 nights in Trinity, 1 night in Bonavista, and 2 nights in Twillingate. Our interests are icebergs, whales, puffins, and walking trails, as well as enjoying Newfoundland culture in the evenings. We would much appreciate your suggestions on must see places and must do activities.

We're also going there in July, starting on the other side.
I looked at the Newfoundland and Labrador tourist website, and ordered their maps and tour book, which is quite useful.
They mailed them to me.

You can also follow them on Facebook, and get short posts about the areas that way.
I can't find many travel books on Newfoundland, but there were a couple in the library system.

My son and I spent a week in eastern NFL in July, 2016.
July is pretty late for icebergs, but we did manage to see one near Elliston, which you will want to check out because of the possibility of puffins up close (though we weren't lucky).

We hiked the well-known Skerwink trail, above Trinity. Terrific!

Happy to answer other questions.

You are wise not to try and cover too much of a large province. A couple of notes to consider:

  • the drive between Trinity and Bonavista is less than 1 hour and a driving loop of the Bonavista peninsula is less than a day. I would not change locations. Staying in the Trinity/Port Rexton area will shorten the drive time to Twillingate.
  • the Port Rexton brewery is a nice place to rehydrate following the Skerwink Trail. The trail is only about 5km long and not difficult.
  • if flying out of St. John's, it is a 5 hour drive (maybe more depending on stops) from Twillingate.
  • maybe consider dropping a night in Bonavista and add it to St. John's. There are more things to do if the weather is not nice, the East Coast Trail is nearby, and it is possible to see all the things you mention within a short drive from St. John's. Some of the places include Flatrock, Torbay, Middle Cove, Cape Spear, Petty Harbour, Bay Bulls, Witless Bay, Ferryland....

Thank you S J, LIZinPA, & David for your comments and suggestions. Yes, the Newfoundland tourist sites and brochure are packed with all kinds of useful information. We have set a preliminary itinerary:
- St John's: Signal Hill, Cape Spear, Jellybean Row, The Rooms, Quidi Vidi, George Street (Night in St John's);
- Avalon: Witless Bay, Mobile (boat tour), Ferryland, Colony of Avalon (Night in St John's);
- Cape St Mary's, Placentia, Arnold's Cove (trail) (night in Trinity);
- Bonavista: Elliston (puffins), Bonavista, Port Rexton (trail), Trinity (boat tour), Theatre (night in Trinity);
- Bonavista: Terra Nova, Eastport (boat tour) (night in Eastport);
- Twillingate: Prime Berth, sea kayaking (night in Twillingate);
- Twillingate: Boat tour, Long Point Lighthouse; dinner theatre (night in Twillingate);
- 5 hours from Twillingate to St John's to catch our flight home.
Perhaps a bit ambitious; but would also welcome input regarding your particular favourites.

It is a busy schedule and some things to consider are below:

Day One

  • Jelly Bean Row is not an actual street. Take some time to walk along Gower Street and look at Victoria Street, Prescott Street, York Street, etc. If you time it right, stop at Moo Moos, on Kings Road, for an ice cream and NL Chocolate, Duckworth Street, for some great chocolate treats.

  • Quidi Vidi Village can be reached by trail from Signal Hill, with proper timing the Quidi Vidi Brewery is an excellent place to maintain hydration levels. Mallard Cottage is just steps away with fantastic food in a historic building. NL Chocolate has a satellite location about half way up Signal Hill if you plan to combine this as a walking tour.

  • Lots of places on George Street – we like the Yellowbelly Brewery, Bridie Molloy’s, Greensleeves, etc.

Day Two
- Looks busy, plan your day around boat schedules

Day Three
- Lots of driving here, Arnold’s Cove is not a typical tourist spot even though it is along the way. Clarenville is a larger town if supplies or a rest is needed. Consider dropping Cape St. Mary’s if you do not have anything planned here.

Day Four
- Looks good but be mindful of schedules, we seen puffins at the Bonavista lighthouse on our last visit. Maybe stop there first and work your way back to Trinity.

Day Five
- Eastport is a great spot to slow down a bit and it appears that is what you are doing even though only for one night

Day Six and Seven
- Looks good

Thank you David for your reply; especially for your suggestions in St John's. Day 3 is a lot of driving, but we heard that the birds on the rock cliffs at Cape St Mary's are not to be missed. We thought we would take a break in Arnold's Cove for the Bordeaux walking trail and the Placentia lookout if time permits. Also looking for suggestions for a place for lunch to break up the 5 hour drive back to St John's on Day 8.

We spent 16 days in Newfoundland in June/ July 2016, The Eye Witness guide to Canada has a Newfoundland chapter it is only 7 pages, but loaded with maps and information on what to see and do. You could probably get it through a library, somewhere i found the Newfoundland section as a downloadable pdf, if you send me a PM I think i can attach it to a reply.
The free guide book from the Nfld government is very good as well. In many places there are very few options for eating, we took an insulated cooler bag and carried sandwich makings with us. we stayed in Bonavista for 3 nights and found the Mifflin's Tea Room to be one of the better places to eat.

Hi Peter. I hope your planning is going well. Let me know if you have any other questions.

As luck would have it, my wife and I are heading to Ontario for 8 nights including the Canada Day weekend. I am going to start a new thread for this topic.

Thank you David. Flights are booked; car rental booked; hotels booked. Starting to make reservations at various attractions, restaurants, boat tours, and theatres.
You'll enjoy Niagara-on-the-Lake and Toronto. I'll respond on your other thread.

Consider visiting St Pierre et Miquelon so you can say you went to France! Confuse your friends who may not know that part of North America is still, politically, part of France.
Also, for hilarity, get your photo with some of the hilarious local names, such as Dildo, in the background. Your friends may, or may not, understand the humour.
Have a lovely time.
