New Zealand - Passes required for Routeburn Trail 1-day walk?

Going to NZ in Nov., and was wondering if my group of three were to do just a one-day hike on the Routeburn Trail, do we need to get advance passes? We will not be staying in any of the huts, so I'm not sure if we need to get passes or not (even though it's a Great Walk). I've been searching for an answer, but can't seem to find one. Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks,
JP

You don't need anything to just hike the trail. It's about an 8 mile round trip to the first hut, on an excellent, mostly level track. That's assuming you're starting from the trailhead near Glenorchy - haven't done it from the other side.
The second hut is about 12 miles out and back, with some hill climbing involved..
It's one of the prettiest hikes in NZ.
