We’re spending a week in Kerikeri for a base from which to explore more quiet, local activities. Museums, art galleries, beaches, small music venues, markets.
We are looking for another interesting place for a week before we head back to Auckland.
Any suggestions will help immensely.

There are some beautiful beaches close to Whangarei. Two I know well are Langs Beach which our family visited when I was a teenager and Waipu Cove. But there are some others that are equally spectacular. Whangarei is a fairly unappealing place so don't stop other than perhaps for lunch.
Tutukaka is also worth considering. After having experienced a hearty dose of NZ history in Kerikeri and nearby Waitangi and Russell I am sure you will enjoy taking a break at the beach.
