I know it's not Europe....but any recommendations for a hotel near the Theater District in NYC?? I'm finding it hard to narrow it down....
What's your budget?
I stayed in the Belvedere 2 years ago on 48th. It was nice, comfortable and quiet and on the cheaper end of the NYC scale as I remember but I can’t remember how much. Definitely in the theater neighborhood. I love NYC.
Thank you!
And budget…..I’m assuming upper 200’s? Around there?
Think more like $400.
Big Apple, big prices.
Trip Advisor NYC forum can be very helpful, both to Search by date, and to ask a personal request. Some of the members seem to be willing to spend time querying the hotel websites themselves.
Consider looking at Alaska Airlines vacation packages. Several years ago we booked a package with flights, transfers and hotel for 3 people that way and ended up at a hotel right next to the Hudson Theater, and walking distance to many others. Unfortunately that particular hotel isn't open anymore but you may find a good deal/good location. We've used Alaska packages several times and liked the choices.
Wow!! Great advice…..thank you everyone.
I thought I might be low-balling…..
There is always the Hilton on 53 street to fall back on. Or the Plaza Hotel across from Central Park just off 57 street.
We stayed at Refinery Hotel near Bryant Park and walked to the Theater District multiple times. Has a rooftop bar if that's your scene.
Just to tack on to Rebecca's comments about The Algonquin , watch this video about the place - " The Ten Year Lunch " https://youtu.be/_ObXzrP4wdc?si=D34yr4fXO1byFc6v , and further , a few blocks away at the NY Public Library ( 5 Ave and 42 St ) is a year long show about the iconic magazine's 100 year anniversary , Also the fine biography of Harold Ross ," Genius in Disguise " by Thomas Kunkel " tells the colorful story of " The New Yorker " Finally , if you are a " New Yorker" fan , Wes Anderson's recent film " The French Dispatch " is a thinly veiled paean to the magazine
Wow...thanks for all the replies. Clearly I need to reset my expectations!! But I am having fun shopping around!
I’ve also stayed at the Belvedere and The Algonquin and enjoyed our stays. Unless you plan on spending a good bit of your time in the hotel, save your dollars for the fun stuff and pick a nice hotel that may not have all the newest and fanciest amenities, but is clean, safe and offers a great stay at reasonable rates.
While I have you……what is the best way to either LaGuardia or JFK from Manhattan area??
Some locals poo-poo it but subway works fine. Free shuttle bus from LGA to Jackson Heights station then E train. Tap payment. Elevators at this station.
From JFK it’s the AirTrain to Sutphin then the same E subway that passes the LGA people closer in. Again tap payment, no tickets to buy.
There are many other choices, but Uber/Lyft not usually price competitive with taxis so the method to avoid.
Just what Toby said. I’m flying in to LGA in 2 weeks and that’s exactly what I have done and will do. Carry on bag toting, 75 in 9 days year old solo traveler. And the airport bus from LGA to Jackson heights subway hook up is free!
I am flying to NYC next week! We bought a "bundle" on Expedia...two round trip flights DFW to LGA and 5 nights at the Ameritania Hotel 230 West 54th Street (which I think is in the Theater District)for $1200. We haven't stayed there yet, but it gets good reviews. I kind of think you can stay anywhere you like because the subway will get you anywhere you want to go. And we plan on taking the bus (Q70) to Jackson Heights in Queens, then transferring to the subway to get from the airport to Manhattan. We have used the bundle feature on Expedia many times with no problems. Many people say to only book directly with airlines and hotels. I guess we like to live on the edge.
I don't know if it is still available and which bus we took but we traveled by bus direct from LGA to the Port of Authority building which should put you close to your hotel. It is located at 8th Avenue between 40 and 42nd streets
