New York

Just arrived NY and wanting to take best advantage of 4 days (one of which is pre-booked site seeing tour of Empire State Building/Statue of Liberty). Hotel is on Broadway, just across from Central Park and plan also to do a Broadway Show (any clues on getting best price tickets) and other "must do" things whilst here.
Thanks in anticipation.

If you love old buildings visit the old customs house on Bowling Green - near Wall Street. It also houses the museum of the American Indian. They have tours of the museum and custom house. The custom house tour is tomorrow and Saturday at noon. Everything is free, entrance, tours, bathroom, etc. we were there Tuesday and it was wonderful. No line. It is absolutely one of the best buildings in NYC. The website is americanindian.si.edu. The si stands for Smithsonian Institute. As a bonus, they have a great gift shop. The Museum at Fraunces Tavern is one block away and costs $7. Very interesting. You can also have a light meal there, food is good. We didn’t have a reservation so we put our name down, did the museum, and they called us when a table was ready. The Bull is one block further.

It is going to be very hot and muggy over the next couple of days (highs of around 36C/95F over the weekend) so unless you like that kind of weather (I don't!) I'd prioritize indoors attractions and museums, of which NYC has many. What are your particular interests? I can pull off the top 10 TripAdvisor attractions list, but there's so much to do in New York that a sense of what you're interested in can really help to narrow down what to do!

And b/c of the heat, I'd limit time on subways, because of a/c issues but more importantly, the chance of power outages (you'll get stuck if you're on a subway car).

If you are not set on a particular show, there is a kiosk in Times Square that sells unsold tickets for that day/night performances at discounted prices, sometimes up to 50% off face price. If I remember right, it's called "TKTS" or something similar.

This is hardly a comprehensive list:
- Riverside Trail from Battery Park along the Hudson River (http://www.nyc.gov/html/edc/pdf/greenway_mapside.pdf)
- The Highline (https://www.thehighline.org/visit/)
- World class museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, Guggenheim, etc.
- Central Park
- Greenwich Village
- 9/11 Memorial
- Eataly (massive Italian food emporium with multiple restaurants) combined with the Word Trade Center Transport Hub ("The Occulus")

Does anyone know of a garden built along a railway track and which you can along in New York?

Yes, it's called the High Line - I posted the link to it previously. It's not exactly a garden, although it has plantings. It's a great re-use of a former rail tracks over the Meatpacking District. It's about a mile long and terminates at Hudson Yards.

If you are interested in smaller museums that just take a few hours, the Frick Museum is excellent. We really enjoyed Beautiful!

We are about to have one of our worst heat waves of the summer. Do what you can to avoid the subway unless you are taking the subway early morning as there is no air conditioning at any platform except for one — Grand Central/42 St for the 4,5 & 6. The subway cars themselves are air-conditioned however.

Take the bus.
