New Orleans Christmas

Hello, friends! I am making my first trip to New Orleans over the holiday season and I absolutely cannot wait. I ask this while admitting I'm just starting my research, but this site always has the best suggestions anyway, so I'm starting here.

What's fun to do on Christmas Day in New Orleans? I'm Catholic, so mass in a beautiful church could be in. I'm Catholic, so day and/or night drinking could be in. Thoughts?

Thanks so much!

We went to New Orleans in early December, so not over Christmas, but one of the things we most enjoyed was touring some of the mansions (inside them) in the Garden district. The preservation society opens up 8-10 homes for touring, one weekend a year, usually in December. You do need to buy tickets for this. It was so great to see inside these historic homes and one of them we even got to chat with the owner.

St Louis Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the US, has a nightly projection light show from Dec 23 - 31, Christmas day mass is at noon.

hey musttravelmore
been to new orleans a year after hurricane. we took a cocktail history tour (check getyourguide.com or graylinetours.com, frenchquarterphantomsghosttours.com) it was great, learn about the french quarter, some cocktails being medicinal, famous people there. do go to the carousel bar in monteleone hotel, hold on to your bag and not too much to drink, it rotates. took a city tour to the garden area, tulane, cementaries, take a tour thru treme, african american place for their culture and sounds. we rented a car for the day and drove across lake ponchartrain to slidell to bay city to abita springs fro lunch and their beer than back to new orleans. walked around french quarter deciding what good food to eat, people watch, and cafe de monde for beignets. you'll have a great time. we loved it.

Go to Parkway Bakery & Tavern on Monday or Wednesday and get the fried oyster po'boy. You'll thank me later.

Agree with Steve! They are the best and the oyster ones are only available on Monday and Wednesdays, and Parkway is closed on Tuesdays. Easy Uber or streetcar ride from the French Quarter.

If weather permits the hop on hop off bus is good if open and schedule allows. You can avoid lines at cafe du monde by not waiting on a table and going around to the side for the walk up window. You HAVE to go there. Go to Napoleon house and get a Pimms Cup drink.
