In terms of ease of transport, safety, infrastructure, ect, what would be the most accessible country for an American tourist interested in historical and eco-tourism in the region?
Not sure what you are asking. Try Mexico? or several of the Caribbean Island.
Look into Guatemala. A friend of mine from the US recently traveled there with a small group of women and visited small villages. She loved it... and the people, and felt very safe traveling there.
@DianeC Thank you, do you know how she got around, and which parts of Guatemala she focused on?
I would consider the U.S. State Department's travel advisories on wherever you decide -

@Going234 Very helpful, thank you. Looks like all countries in the region are Level 3 except CR, Panama, and Belize.
We haven’t been to Belize since pre Covid but it’s not a country that would be at the top of my list for safety. We were in Costa Rica in February, almost 4 weeks. And although not Central America, we were in Peru last fall and absolutely loved the country, there is so much more than Macchu Picchu. Of 65+ countries visited on 5 continents, it’s near the top if you decide to consider outside of Central America, lots of flight options from the Us to Lima.
Not sure that I would feel safe in Honduras, Guatemala or El Salvador. I felt safe in Costa Rica. and Panama.
Peru is amazing, just to it on a tour. PeruAgency.com has great tours of Machu Picchu, Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Don't miss it as well as Lima.
Sounds like Peru is the way to go. I was also looking at Equador, but I know they've had a large increase in violence due to the drug cartels in recent years.
Peru! Wow! Machu Pichu was indeed fantastic. In addition to the normal Peru stops, consider the colca canyon to see the giant condors too!
Belize -- go to Chaa Creek eco resort, check the local mayan digs, the little town san something or another, take a bus into Tikal, go back to Belize city (stop by the tiny zoo where you can literally scratch the jaguar through the fence if you dare) to the airport, fly down to Placencia village, take a boat to the 2nd biggest reef, snorkel-- ah, that's great too!
Whatever you choose, have a great trip.
