Morocco! Night train from Marrakech to Meknes?

Can anyone tell me whether there is a night train from Marrakech to Meknes? Are sleeper berths available? Please comment on approximate price and what to expect. My first visit to Morocco is coming up and I am looking for comments on what to expect. Thanks.

Here's a link to the schedule. It looks as if there's a train at 10:20 PM with some sort of sleeping accommocations, but it only gets you as far as Sidi Slimane. I don't know whether it runs every day of the week or all year. I'm sure the basic train fare will be moderate. The sleeper charge might well be considerably more expensive than the fare.

If you're traveling alone, I don't think taking a night train would be prudent. That's something a Moroccan woman probably would not do unless accompanied by her husband or her father. Inaccurate conclusions might be drawn. But it has been over 20 years since I visited Morocco, and things might have changed. I trust a more recent visitor will correct me if I'm wrong.

There are daytime trains taking just over 7 hours.

You'll get some hits if you Google "Train Marrakesh to Meknes".

Maybe there is a women's compartment on the train. Used to be for solo, independent travelers this country was horrific, maybe it's changed. I know I will never go back.

That's interesting, Tom. I wouldn't have thought there were issues for a male traveler. I (female) traveled to Morocco on a self-planned, independent trip with my mother in the early 1990s and we had no issues. My reading prior to the trip did suggest that a woman traveling alone might attract unwanted attention. My mother and I stayed in moderately-priced accommodations and depended on public transportation, including the shared taxis that are often used to get from town to town. It was a great trip.

If I were traveling there alone, I'd be doing a lot of Googling and guide-book reading to see what conditions might be like.

For the two Train Hotel routes, private single sleepers are available and more affordable than they would be in most of Europe. To reserve a space in a female-only quad couchette, I would book in person at a train station or travel agency to confirm that availability. Of course, as already stated, there is no convenient overnight schedule for the route Marrakech to Meknes (or Fes).
