Mexico to SE Asia

I'm retired and have no time constraints. I am now in Mexico and ultimately want to end up somewhere in SE Asia, either Kuala Lumpur, the Phillippines, or Cambodia. I'm trying to do this as cost-efficiently as possible, as opposed to a long, expensive MEX to MNL, CEB, or KUL. I'm considering flying into Rome or Madrid for a week, then taking rail or flights eastbound until I reach Asia. I don't mind venturing to India also. I've been to Eastern Europe so spending more time there isn't a priority. If anyone has done anything similar, please share with me any advice or suggestions. Thank you

Has anyone done anything like this?

First things first: research the visas you might need en route

have you thought of a cabin on a trans-Pacific cargo ship to China or Taiwan or South Korea, and then onward from there?
