Hi, we will be going to Japan this late May . We already have Allianz annual plan. Thinking if we should still get a medjet insurance as one of the travelers is in his late 70’s but healthy. Thought I read about medical transport back to US ( God forbid, should there be an incident). In this case wondering which will be the primary travel insurance and if it will be more complicated to talk to both insurance should an event occur? Thank you.
I have both an annual Allianz Travel policy and a Medjet Assist Policy.
My Allianz policy does include medical evacuation but only to the nearest hospital that can handle my medical problem.
Medjet Assist offers evacuation to the hospital of your choosing. And that could be back in the USA.
Big difference.
If you get both policies, you let Allianz pay for your expenses in Japan. You let Medjet Assist take care of the evacuation.
BTW, if you are a member of AARP you can get a discount on Medjet Assist.
Like Frank I have both annual Allianz and Medjet.
Remember that anyone 75 and older needs to manually apply and submit a doctor’s statement. Your late 70’s traveller needs to apply asap.

I have both Allianz and Medjet Horizon. Fortunately never filed a claim with either.
Hi Frank II , Carol and Horsewoofie, Thanks a
Lot for your replies . I will help him call medjet to apply.
Hi, I am trying to call medjet to help one of the travelers apply. I called 1-800-527-7478 and it is for someone who is already a member. I guess I will need to help him apply online only . Thanks.
Hi, I tried to call medjet again and finally someone answered who was helpful. I was able to get the quote and a form to fill up and for his doctor to sign since he is over 75yo. Thanks a lot!
I've purchased MetJet a few times, for "exotic" trips like Southern Africa. I never thought about it for European trips because I am assuming that medical facilities would be excellent in Spain and in Italy, the two countries I visit often. But maybe I should re-consider.
I would love to hear of anyone who has actually had to use their evacuation services......it's all well and good to read their brochures, but what happens when someone needs to get to a hospital back home? Do they fulfill their promises?
Is there anyplace I can look this up?

Just making sure that you understand Medjet is not medical insurance, it is a membership for medical evacuation when away from home, abroad or in the US. If you get laid up in a hospital in another country and do not have medical evacuation coverage, you should probably have medical insurance to cover your costs for medical care.
I have had Medjet for many years, never needed it. I self insure for medical costs outside the US, although I have a Medicare supplement (Plan G) that includes emerency medical coverage outside the US, too.
Re the question: does Medjet fulfill its promises: I have been a Medjet member for years. Have never needed evacuation myself. Medjet's periodic newsletters always cite recent evacuations (how much cost Medjet/$0 cost to insured). Obviously Medjet's own communications are not unbiased. However, I have never heard or read criticism of Medjet for not fulfulling promises.
That's great. Yes, I understand that it's for evacuation. What I meant about not buying it for European trips is that there might not be a need for evacuation, since medical facilities in Spain and in Italy are generally good. But my partner is in the "old" group (Notice that I do not include myself in this category) and I think it would offer peace of mind to have in case of catastrophic illness.
But you all buy annual policies, not a separate policy for every trip?? (We usually take (together) two trips of three weeks each every year---usually to Italy or Spain. And I spend a month in Spain, solo. I will look into the cost benefit of buying annual policies from MetJet....and it's good to hear that they back up their promises in case of emergency.
Thank so much.
Hi Everyone , thanks for all your replies to this thread.
I ended up getting a medjet insurance for my husband ( the other travelers late 70’s) and me. Since I am not 70 yet I was able to be included in his plan. It was actually very fast. Once I get our medical doctor to sign his health evaluation form and faxed it in the am , I got a call by noon. I checked the credit card payment but purposely did not include the # so they called me. I have spoke to this person prior so feel ok to give him the info. We are not an AARP member. Would have have saved about $25 but figured we will be leaving this month so might not have time to apply. We do have AAA but didnt think to ask .Anyway, we have Medicare insurance, Allianz annual and now medjet diamond. I do this for my peace of mind and hope to never have to use it . Thanks again.
