Mea Culpa! It took some time but now I finally understand.

An apology to all who I frustrated when I rebooked an American Airlines flight with a fraudulent company.

I now understand what I must have done.

I went to aa.com to rebook but unfortunately clicked on a fake website which looked exactly like American Airlines. And then I scrolled down to Contact and ended up calling the fraudsters to rebook.

And then I made the situation worse by my continued confusion which I will not repeat.

It took probably a couple of days before I finally understood what I had done.

It is getting straightened out but I am still dealing with the situation.

The new credit card that Citi sent me has never arrived and probably got lost or stolen in the US Postal System. I have to call Citi back tomorrow if it does not arrive by then and they are going to do something.

I did recover $450 and Citi has allowed me to reopen my dispute. I am working on getting back the rest of the money which is just over $300.

Lessons learned. Do nothing when under a lot of stress. Take a deep breath and be careful who you call, text or email. Be careful what you do or say.

In the case of fraud using a credit card, report it to your credit card company and let them take it from there.

For those who are not aware of my previous situation:

There are a lot of fake airline and hotel websites out there. They look just like the real brands. When you click on them, the phone number is also a fake. You will get connected to a fraudster who is part of. a criminal operation.

I clicked on a fake aa.com site and called the number on the site. A fraudster rebooked me but charged me a lot of money which I am trying to fully recoup. It was all made worse by my confusion and
continuing mistakes.

As Claudia says, no need to apologize.

Unfortunately, you, as well as all of us, are going to continue to come across fraudster and scams.

The best thing that has happened out of all of this is what you have learned.

Glad everything is at least on the road to resolution.

Note: I'm pretty sure you did not click on aa.com. You thought you clicked on
aa.com as that is what Google or some other search engine gave you. Unfortunately,
search engine results are not based on fact, they are based on # of hits to a site,
which gives scam sites the opening they used with you.

United now requires 2 factor authorization to access their site, so if, for example,
you don't get that prompt in the access process, you should sense that something
is wrong.

As noted, you've learned some new things which will hopefully help in the future. But
you (all of us) need to be aware that scams keep on evolving and we need to evolve as
well.

The new credit card that Citi sent me has never arrived and probably got lost or stolen in the US Postal System.

This seems unlikely. Your new credit card is almost certainly still somewhere in the pipeline and will arrive in your postal mail with no fanfare if you simply relax and wait for it. Mail does get lost, mail does get stolen, but both are pretty rare occurrences. It's much, much more likely that neither of these things has happened, and you just need to be patient (sound familiar?).

FWIW, it can take 2, 3, or maybe even 4 weeks between the time when you say "get me a new card!" and when your replacement card actually shows up at your residence. Sometimes (with some banks) it can happen quickly, but it doesn't always. In your case, as your card was cancelled due to fraud, and exactly what really had happened may not have initially been made crystal clear to the card's fraud department, and they may have had to do some investigation to sort out details (there was a lot of confusion initially in what you were reporting). Occam's razor applies here (the idea that when trying to understand what has happened, the simplest explanation is usually the correct one): mail theft/loss, or things just take longer than we sometimes would like? Which seems more likely?

So before you assume that you have been a victim of mail theft or the post office lost it, follow your own advice: Stop, slow down, take a few deep breaths and do nothing. Don't call Citi and tell them to send you yet another card. Don't complain to the post office. Just wait. Your replacement credit card will probably show up in your mailbox soon.

I only mention this because it can be hard to break old habits (or even to recognize that you are still exhibiting the same pattern of reacting to a crisis when under stress).

I hope things get better for you.

Hello David from Seattle

well on my citi page, it says that my card is out for delivery as of June 7, 2025

and when I called Citi customer service on Monday, they said that it looks like my new card had scanned at a post office. They did not tell me when

I get informed delivery and have not gotten any notification that I have anything coming from Citi

Th lessons learned from this experience are invaluable.

Isn't something said about the the most painful lessons can be the best lessons.

yes, shoeflyer

I am still not 100% certian what I did but I probably clicked on what I thought was aa.com but instead I clicked on a fake address and site.

Phil, we had to get new Citi cards a couple months ago due to a fraud alert. My Apple Wallet updated before I was off the phone with customer service. The actual card took 10 days to arrive.

bostonphil, I think we have a few things in common, including where we grew up -- until the age of 6, my family lived in Dorchester (right on the Mattapan line, on Norfolk Street, near Morton). glad you are getting resolution on this issue, and fingers crossed that you will be able to recover the remaining $300.

yup, it happens! not travel-related but I recently fell for an Instagram scam....similar to you, it was late at night and the website I visited looked legit. as soon as I hit "checkou", I had the sense something was wrong and immediately sent an email (apparently to a fake address) requesting order cancellation. after doing a bit more research (and yes, I should have done it first), I realized it was a scam and contacted my credit card company. they credited the payment ($65) , and I continue to monitor the card activity. I think this is a scam that operates on getting quick payments and probably the operator knows folks will get credited by the card companies, who in turn will not be able to track them down and claw back the $$$.

Are you talking about 10 business days or 10 days?

When I talked to Citi on Monday, it was suggested that I call back on Thursday if I did not receive it by then which is tomorrow.

I have my new number and can use it online to book excursions for my upcoming cruise in late September.

I need the plastic for when I do the actual cruise.

well milgreen2

I have lived in Texas a very long time but sure miss New England.

Lots of fraudsters out there and they get better and better at what they do. The fake sites look so much like the real thing.

This has taken so much out of me. It feels like I have been very sick and am just recovering.

Absolutely no need to apologize. I hope the worst is behind you, and now you can enjoy the rest of the planning and your trip. And thank you for your courage in putting it out there for us to learn from.

Phil, it was at least 10 regular days. Citi said it would only take a couple of days.

And I've had several items listed by the Post Office to be delivered that day in my daily digest that ended up taking an extra 4-5 days to get to my mailbox. My local PO just shrugs and says oh, well.

Citi told me that it would take about 5 days or so, maybe a week.

I would hate to have them cancel the one that has been out for delivery since June 4th and then have it arrive.

I am glad that you recovered part of your money, and it looks like you are on track to recover the rest - fingers crossed!
At the very worst (which I hope will not materialize!), while losing $300 is a very unpleasant dent in a budget, such scams can be much worse... like thousands worse. And there seems to be more and more of them around!

Hi balso

yes, you are so correct.

Consumers have posted about the company that ripped me off on Pissed Off Consumer and Trust Pilot as well as BBB. Some persons have lost thousands of dollars.

My memory is that most of the persons posting are Americans so I do not know if these crooks mainly target Americans or if non-Americans are posting elsewhere.

One of the victims says that the fraudsters are a Nigerian scam.

But these crooks seems to have many names and phone. numbers. They claim to be both domestic and international. And they also have many phone numbers.

Among their disguises is being a third party company that can get you cheap airline tickets and best hotel prices.

I am feeling lucky because it could have been worse but I do hope to get my remaining $300 plus refunded.

I agree. I recently got a new BofA card and it took 10+ days to get there. Bank of America sent me a tracking URL so I was able to monitor its progress, and at one point, it was stuck in a location for several days without any updates. That is quite common, and David has given you good advice.

Mardee and every one else

Would you believe that the mailman put my credit card in a neighbor's mailbox

She does not check her mail everyday so we do not know how long it was there.

It is addressed to my apartment. Fortunately she is my next door neighbor and very honest

hello jenm

it is said that Patience is a Virtue/ Many traditions emphasize patience and I am working on it but my credit card still did not belong in my neighbors mailbox.

But very relieved tht it has been found

Phil. Your card should not have been misdelivered. But I know from experience talking to the post office about delivery issues is like talking to a brick. They just don't care.

I never talked to the post office about my misplaced credit card. I spoke to Citi bank about it. They genuinely did seem to care.

But hey I got it and all is good.
