Marrakesh: Riad or Hotel? Fly direct from the US or from Spain?

Hi all, we are two couples planning a trip to Spain with a 2 day stop in Marrakesh. We have two questions:

  1. Should we stay in a Riad or Hotel? What's the difference? Pros and Cons of each?
  2. Most of our trip will be in Spain. Are we better flying from the US to Marrakesh directly, then flying from Marrakesh to a large airport in Spain, OR, are we better flying US to Spain, spending part of our trip in Spain, then flying from Spain to Marrakesh and back to Spain to leave to come back to the states? What should we consider when making that decision?

Thanks!

We stayed at La Maison Arabe (which is considered a riad and I believe the oldest one within the medina walls), and it was lovely. Very clean, charming, great service, wonderful breakfasts, fabulous location). We also walked to the riad that was build by Richard Branson's sister (I believe it was called El Finn) where some friends at stayed on a previous trip, and it was lovely/charming, too.

Riads are generally smaller (I think) than hotels and often represent more of the local charm, culture. I feel we made the right decision by staying in one.

There are several ways to approach your trip, but we flew into Barcelona (spent 4 nights there) and then flew to Granada (by Vueling) and spent two nights there, then had a driver take us from Granada thru Gibraltar (my husband wanted to see it), and then to our overnight in the old town section of Marbella (which was charming/comfortable), then we had the small hotel arrange a driver to Malaga (from which we flew to Morocco on Royal Air Maroc). Then our flight home was from Marrakech and without looking up our previous flight schedule, I remember connecting thru Amsterdam before arriving in the US. For us not looping back to Spain just seemed more efficient/quicker for our flight home.

Which approach is better depends on flight schedules, price, etc. and also what you want to visit and in which order.

We found Spain more relaxing than Morocco. And, because you have to be much more careful with food/water in Morocco, we figured we would put that section at the end of our visit.

I can't imagine going to Morocco for just two days, but if you want to do that, you can potentially save some vacation time by flying into or out of Morocco, thereby avoiding a second flight between Spain and Morocco. However, whether this is practical depends on what sort of flights you can find from your home airport to Marrakech or vice versa, and their cost. There will probably be multiple conections required. I use Google Flights to look for my transatlantic flights, but there are other options.

If you add your home city to your profile, someone here might have a good suggestion.

I should have asked your travel dates. Without them, I just randomly selected a 2-week period in June. For those dates, it looked as if a Madrid RT would be quite a bit cheaper than flying multi-city into or out of Marrakesh, but the Marrakesh/Barcelona combo might not be much more expensive than a Barcelona RT. So I guess it may depend on where you plan to go in Spain.

I have no reason to think you plan to skip Madrid, but just in case you are: Barcelona is pretty isolated from Andalucía, and travelers sometimes fly that leg of their itineraries. If Madrid and environs are not part of your trip plan, inserting Morocco between Barcelona and an Andalucian destination would be a clever move--assuming the airfares were good, of course.

Riad - because you can stay at a hotel anywhere! Try the Riad El Wiam (on booking.com). We had a great experience there a little over 5 years ago. We flew from Chicago to Marrakesh and then took the train up to Tangier before crossing the straight via ferry back to Spain.

Kellie....what I think you should first consider is either way you go/leave from Marrakech you are going to spend the better part of a day getting there or hitting the ground running if flying in from US and recovering from your trans-Atlantic journey.

Personally I believe Morocco deserves more than a 2 day visit. We spent 10 days in Morocco in 2011 piggy-backed onto a week in Spain and found Morocco to be culturally diverse, exotic and the highlight of our trip. 2 nights in Marrakech would not even begin to show you what Morocco has to offer.

That said....I agree that Riads are the way to go for accommodations.
