Malta or other

We are attending a wedding in Barcelona end of May, 2027 and want to take advantage while there, to explore somewhere for approximately 5 or 6 days. We are contemplating Malta or the Azores, both of which were suggested. We only travel maybe once a year or once every few years so really would like to spread our wings to explore different cultures.

We are not beach people. Love food, some history and wandering the streets and staying away from touristy areas. We were in Florence, Venice, Rome and Bologna this past June and did Porto last year. Any recommendations?

After listening to Rick’s interview with Trish Clark, I am intrigued about renting a room at a Convent or Monastery. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Thank you all for your wealth of knowledge.

Have you ruled out exploring Catalonia? So many gorgeous towns, so different from Barcelona, and without losing time to another flight. You could dip over the border into France as well. See if Girona or anywhere in that vicinity looks interesting.
I am not sure if the Azores fits what you are looking for (though happy to be proven wrong). If the flights work out to make it very efficient, six days is a nice amount of time for Malta, but I always choose to exhaust the close by possibilities first, good luck—late May is a wonderful time to be in the Mediterranean!
