Looking for a recommendation for a tour company, in the spirit of Rick Steves travel, for traveling to these destinations. Anyone travel recently with a great company?
Odysseys Unlimited is a great company that does a combined Machu Picchu and Galapagos tour. We took their Treasures of Peru tour with them and really enjoyed it. We toured the Galapagos on a separate trip with NatGeo Lindblad and had more time in the Galapagos than you would have with the combined Odysseys Unlimited tour. It just depends on how much time you want to spend in the Galapagos.
Thank you! Odyssey is a tour group that was suggested so this is good to hear. When did you travel?
Odyssey is a good tour company, we have done a tour with them.
We did Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands on two separate trips.
For Machu Picchu, Cusco and the Sacred Valley, we used Peruagency.com and it was fantastic. It was in late March 2019 cost was $799 per person. Our tour was private, just wife and self with a dedicated driver/university educated tour guide.
I priced others and Peruagency beat them all.
As for the Galapagos, we used Celebrity Cruise lines and our 10 day tour included a week long cruise of the Galapagos. It was wonderful. Our cruise was for the Northern part of the islands on a cruise ship with only 45 passengers. Our tour groups were about 10-12 persons each with an excellent guide. We had options for each excursions (usually three) We always took the longer hikes, etc. Many choices for snorkeling as well. It was pricey, we could have done a land tour that included Ecuador's Amazon and Quito, for less, but it wouldn't have matched our cruise. Our tour also had three days in Quito.
I did both Machu Picchu and the Galápagos this past spring with Overseas Adventure Travel (https://www.oattravel.com/mpg?icid=global:small_ship_adventures:americas:mpg2021)
It was an excellent itinerary, and what I love about OAT is (1) small group size - we had 12 on our trip; and (2) no single supplement.
Plus it was a private ship just for our group. Excellent service.
We traveled to Machu Picchu in the month of August and the Galapagos in the month of February.
Even through we did MP in late March, I understand that the rainy season for that area of Peru doesn't end until April 1.
We had a cruise from Chile to San Diego in late March and wanted to do MP prior to that cruise. It worked out well.
I do believe the Rainy season for that area of Peru is from Jan to the end of March.
I did a fabulous trip to Machu Picchu run by REI (in July 2019), but they're not offering it any longer. For the Galapagos, I was there in March 2022 through a wonderful tour run by Hurtigruten. Highly recommended!
