Luxor - east side or west side for one night?

We are spending one night in Luxor before getting on a river cruise (the cruise does two days of additional site seeing in Luxor so we won't miss the sites). However, we need accommodations for the first night in Luxor. Is it best to be on the west side or the east side for one night? We pick up the cruise on the east side but don't necessarily have to stay on that side. Info about both sides and accommodation suggestions?

We stayed at the beautiful Steigenberger Nile Palace Hotel heading south on the river , it is on the right side. It doesn’t really matter which side. Highly recommend this 5* hotel.

All of the hotels we stayed in were excellent but this one really stood out.

If you can afford the Winter Palace and can get a reservation, do that.

I have enjoyed staying on both sides of the Nile, and I am glad to have experienced both. The east bank is more crowded and touristy. The west bank has a local village feel. The vibes are totally different.

If you can afford it, stay at the Winter Palace. It's absolutely one of my favorite hotels anywhere. They haven't changed the decor since Lord Carnarvon stayed there in the 1920's, and it's like living in another era. Try to get a room in the old building if you can. If you want to see the non-tourist side of Luxor, exit through the back door and you enter yet again another world --- no touts, no scammers, and the people are super friendly.

The nice thing about the west bank is that it is very quiet, and you won't be bothered by touts. The inconvenient part is that you have to take the ferry to get to where the action is on the east bank. We stayed at El Nakhil, but there are many modest and charming hotel choices. (It's also orders of magnitude cheaper.)

I am more visual than verbal, and so I have to show pictures:

Thanks to everyone that responded. Marie, thanks for the pics. I, too, am visual so I enjoyed them.
