Looking for suggestions for warmer travel in December

Hello,

I have two weeks to travel around Christmas and New Years. We live in Portland, OR and would like to travel somewhere warmer.

We like the idea of visiting places with a variety of things to do, including some (or all!) of the following:
- beautiful mountains / beaches / rainforest / hikes
- cultural city life / architecture
- rich history
- animals (dolphins?) / safari

We are hoping to travel fairly budget-friendly, including cost / ease of accessibility for traveling to various sights. Splurging a bit is fine on a tour, as long as other expenses come out on the lower end.

Do you have the perfect place in mind that would be nice weather-wise in December? We have recently been to Maui and traveled all over the island, 5 hotels in 6 nights. It was amazing. We are considering another trip to a different island, just because it's easy, but I would love to take advantage of the long chunk of time I have. Ideas we are considering, though know little about: Thailand, Costa Rica, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, or even Spain... there's not really anywhere we'd say "no" to, unless the only main highlight is to sit at a resort or go shopping. If it's too hot and sweaty to do much comfortably besides sit by the water, I'd rather find somewhere a little cooler. We've only recently taken our first trip to Europe, mainly in Germany, so we are not super-experienced travelers.

We also have a short (8-10 days) available to travel in early April, and would welcome any ideas for places that might be nicer at that time of year, but also doable on a short trip.

Thanks, KGC! Do you have any suggestions of areas in which to spend time there? Any sights or activities to seek out? Travel tips?

Costa Rica. Alaska Air flies there in case you gave their mikes or companion fares. We spent 10 days in August 2019 split between Chachagua Rainforest Hotel (absolutely amazing), Baldi Hot Springs (like a Disneyland of hot springs), and a condo just across from the beach in Tamarindo.

I thought it was sooooo much better than Hawaii. The food is great (and very cheap), people are super friendly, tourism industry is top notch, you can immerse yourself in culture or adventure. And it’s waaaaaay more affordable than Hawaii.

Be warned - it can be hot and humid. I am from the PNW and quickly found that I can’t handle humidity. Temps were mid 80’s and humidity was mid 80’s when we were there. My family LOVED it though. We were in the water every day: pools, white water rafting, boogie boarding. We also went zip lining twice. Amazing.

Thailand. Bangkok for the city vibe, history, culture, and great food. Phuket for the beach/water time. Then Chiang Mai for the mountains. Add on a side trip into Cambodia to visit Ankor Wat.

For someplace a little bit cooler, but one of the most beautiful and varied countries in the world: New Zealand. The North Island can be quite warm that time of year.

Brazil! Its south of the equator so summer in December. Major cities like Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, or smaller ones like Ouro Preto and Congonhas have history and architecture we haven't studied in school. Rio and many other locations have beautiful beaches. For nature visit Iguaçu Falls and the Amazon River. Day trips or more out of Manuas provide for your interest in rainforest, animals, and more history. And the food is delicious and varied. But its a big country and you won't be able to see it all in two weeks. I believe it can be budget-friendly as well. Send a pm if you're interested in more thoughts.

What about Kauai and Oahu? Fly into one and out the other. Kauai is one of the most beautiful islands in the world and rivals Tahiti. Oahu is the main island and has the cultural city life and rich history. Both islands have rainforests and hiking trails. Kauai also has a dolphin tour while visiting its main attraction the very dramatic Na Pali Coast.

@MaryPat — Hawaii is a contender, for sure. We would like to visit Kauai and seeing the active volcano on the big island would be incredible. Although the airfare is cheaper due to the shorter flight, I just think lodging in Hawaii is so dang expensive as compared to so many other places, and given we were just in Maui within the year, I thought we might try something different. I went to Oahu as a teenager and loved it, but I think the other two islands might be more what we’ve are looking for.

@CJean — despite the warmth and humidity, I think Thailand sounds perfect! Among other places, it’s been a dream of mine for some time! And oh, we love some good Thai food 😋

Do you have any recommendations of guide books, travel tips, or suggestions for getting from one part of the country to the other?

Although NZ is on our list, too, though we did notice they still require COVID testing upon arrival.. And a bit cooler is not bad in our book… if it’s weather than 40*F we’ll be happy! Just not sure where to start with NZ… is it as affordable as Thailand?

We were in northern Vietnam over Christmas New Year a few years ago. We really enjoyed it - did the ‘classic’ Hanoi, SaPa, Halong Bay trio over about 2 weeks. Nice blend of cultural and city time with some countryside, and the food was great. I just looked over our photos and we were wearing T-shirts so it must have been reasonably warm.
We’ve also been to NZ in December. (And swam with dolphins off the South Island).
Of course, 2 totally different types of experience. NZ isn’t inexpensive, like some Asian countries are, but it’s a great nature based destination.

South America is full of great places to visit.
Peru with Cusco and Machu Picchu is wonderful, but December is rainy season, wait until April

Still Argentina, Uruguay and Chile are great. Do a cruise around the Horn, but visit Buenos Aires and the Santiago/Valparaiso Chile area as well.

We did our wonderful Safari in Kenya and Tanzania just recently (early August). The Great Migration is going on, best time to visit.
Australia and NZ are great in December, just make sure they are open and not closed due to COVID.

Egypt is great in December and January, do a Nile Cruise as well as visit Cairo and the Pyramids.

Lonely Planet is the guidebook that we mostly relied on for Thailand. I also checked out Rough Guides. I was surprised and pleased with how inexpensive the hotels and resorts were. We stayed in a 5* in Bangkok for less than $200CDN/night. Flights within Thailand are inexpensive as well.
