Land Crossing Jordan to Israel (Going to Iran in the near future)

We will be getting a visa for Iran after an Israel trip.

Anyone know anything about this:

We had plans to take a bus to the land crossing Jordan into Israel. Israel will not stamp our passport. They give you a loose leaf paper. But your passport will be stamped by Jordan showing that you exited at the land crossing border between Israel and Jordan.

The Lonely Planet book says that if you have an exit stamps at the relevant Jordan border crossings into Israel (or Egypt) you will not get a visa (into Iran).

If that is true we will have to fly from Amman to Israel to have an airport exit stamp. Flight costs are $388 for a 45 minute flight.

Check on the Jordan forum of tripadvisor to confirm that the exit stamp will include the place of exit. If that's true, then here are the options I see:

  1. Don't go to Iran
  2. Don't go to Israel
  3. Get new passports after Israel before Iran.

Unfortunately we both need new passports. Our Israel trip is in the Spring after the new passport. Our Iran trip is in the fall (long story). We are stuck but a great idea but we can not pull it off.

Last year I went from Eilat to Aqaba and back for the day. We asked the Jordanian border control guy not to stamp our passports. He agreed. However, he was feeling ill that day and when he got to my husband's passport, his hand automatically stamped the passport. He was immediately apologetic and did his best to cross out the stamp.

I don't remember if they stamped something on a separate piece of paper for us instead. But the point is that they were willing not to stamp the passport itself. Don't be shy about telling them this several times, as habit kicks in.

Why did we not want the Jordanian stamp in our passports? Because I previously had a Jordanian stamp in a previous passport, and I'm convinced that it caused us to be seriously searched at the Canadian border one time. They looked at every single thing we had in the car, even examining the dollar bills in my pocketbook...

I wonder if the Iranians would question why you had an entry visa for Jordan but not an exit visa?

We have looked into the second passport thing. It will not work for me or my husband as we have run out of pages on our current passport. We will have a new passport when we get to Jordan.

About the Jordanians not stamping the passport it is a great idea in theory but if it does not work that is a problem. If we get a stamp flying into the country and none when we leave at a land crossing then there is a question about how long we were there for any why did we not get an exit stamp.

I think our only option is flying from Amman so there is an airport stamp. We will not have any Israel stamp as they give you a form a slip of paper. If our passport shows us flying out as far as Iran knows we went home not into Israel via a land crossing.

Our Iran trip will be months after leaving the Jordan. So there is no paper trail we are GOES so our US passport is not stamp as we come in so there is not some missing dates (the Israel) time period to account for.

Someone spoke of Canada questioning them. I hope we do not have any problems with the US and our future GOES status with Jordan and Iran on our passports and travel records.

We decided to fly the 45 minute flight at $388 each to avoid the land crossing and having our passport stamped by Jordan at the land crossing. We really want to go to Iran and do not want to get blackballed when we go to get our visas for there.

Getting new passports after Israel sounds a lot cheaper than the two air tickets from Amman to Tel Aviv.

I agree on the two passport situation. This is the type of circumstance where you can hold two US passports. If you like to travel a lot and may be in a similar situation in the future, this might be a good long term investment for you.

You misunderstand on the 2 passport option.

You actually get 2 concurrently valid passports issued by the US at the same time. This means when you get your currently full passport renewed, you request a second one just for this purpose. You use one for your normal travel. You use the second one when entering places like Iran that care about where you have been. The first passport can get stamped as usual. The second only gets stamped by those countries that wold be upset with your other visits to certain countries.
