We are a group of retirement-age ladies, planning a sorority reunion in South Lake Tahoe for a week, summer 2017. We have rented a house. Guidance please on the things we must do and see! Thank you.
You MUST go to my favorite beach, Sand Harbor, with some floaty tubes.
I always enjoy taking a long ride around the lake--stopping at any brewpub I pass.
And I always like going west 2 miles to Hwy 50, turning right and eating at the Mexican restaurant on the edge of town.
You could also get up early one morning and take "Playing Craps" lessons for free at the casinos. It helps to know what you're doing.
Take a boat cruise, rent some bikes and bike around, walk some trails, drive all the way around the lake and stop at various viewpoints, go to the beach, see the sunsets, stop at Lake Tahoe City and eat at one of the lovely restaurants overlooking the water....it's so gorgeous there, you'll have a great time! Lake Tahoe is a real outdoorsy place so it all depends on your activity levels and what you want to do. You can have a really laid back trip or a more active trip. I'm not into casinos but there are some of those on the Nevada side of the lake.
You can also drive out to some sites not too far away - the town of Truckee is really nice and Donner Lake/ Donner Pass are also worth going to. Definitely stop at any of the Visitor Centers - the people there are very friendly and will help you craft a day's itinerary if stop by and tell them what the group is looking for.
I always enjoy taking a long ride around the lake going west and north toward Emerald Bay and Squaw Valley--stopping at any brewpub I come up on.
And I always liked going west 2 miles to Hwy 50 intersection, turning right on Emerald Bay Road and eating at the Mexican restaurant on the edge of town.

Thank you all for guidance so far, we will take all of your info into consideration!
Hi Pam,
If you and your friends like to ride bikes, I would suggest renting them at the shop at the turnoff/entrance to the Sun Valley ski resort and then biking the easy trail from there along the river to Tahoe City and back. Really pretty ride. You could also take the cable car up the mountain at Sun Valley. There is also a company in Tahoe City that offers sailboat rides (wine and soft drinks included). Sorry I can't remember the name of the sailboat company but you could probably google it. Truckee is a very cute little town with shops and restaurants that will give you the Old West vibe. If the Truckee River is full (praying we have some good snow and runoff this winter), you can raft on the river from Tahoe City. There is a raft company where you can rent rafts. It's an easy raft experience. A little further afield is Virginia City which is very, very Old West. On weekends, there are some retired guys who are authentically dressed in western gear including six guns who walk around Virginia City and like to chat with the tourists. Have lunch at one of the saloons and browse the antique shops and jewelry shops. You might also get to see some wild horses up in the Virginia City Highlands on the way to Virginia City or along the road to Virginia City. As others have said, drive around the lake and stop at the lookouts and enjoy the view. On the CA side of the lake is VIkingsholm which you can tour. You do have to hike down and back but it's not hard. Just take your time. There are also places here you can rent kayaks. If you like photography, this is a great place for it. Hope this helps. Have fun.
Awesome, thanks!
You might want check to see who is performing in Tahoe. We just saw James Taylor at Harvey's outdoor arena. It was an amazing concert under the stars! The hotels near the clubs have wonderful outdoor cafes. Many of those have entertainment. You can sit outside under heat lamps, they will even offer you a cozy blanket to throw over your shoulders. Enjoy an evening cocktail under the stars! I love Tahoe!
Thank you, we will definitely check the schedule!
This is a good website (only for South Lake Tahoe, there's a separate one for North Lake Tahoe)...you can order a travel guide by mail or view it online. I got lots of good maps, restaurant guides, etc. at the Visitors Center on the ground.

Many thanks!
I think Mary from Reno meant Squaw Valley ski resort, not Sun Valley. The latter is in Idaho, the former is in CA near Lake Tahoe.
Thanks, Agnes. You are right. It is Squaw Valley. I was having a senior moment.
